  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This documentary about the Antikethera machine is a testament to how science in ancient Greece applied theory, mathematics and engineering to fabricate a machine that could predict future eclipses and other astronomical phenomena. An amazing accomplishment. Must watch! Enjoy

Just in time for Y0K!

Seriously though, good job, Greeks!

We have a saying here ... Beware of Greeks bearing gifts! ... but this is impressive!

Not only that but The Antikethera Mechanism totally sounds like a supervillains doomsday device.

It's truly amazing and terrifying how easily technology and knowledge can be lost to civilisation.

That's right. Imagine if this kind of device, and the knowledge and skill used to build it, were more common in the ancient world. One wonders how different the course of history would have been.

Yes indeed. Also if we take into account that philosophers like Hero of Alexandria actually who touched on the concept of Relativity by stating that light must have a finite speed and that time is relative to the observer then we have truly lost much. Aristarchus insisted on a heliocentric model and he also claimed that Earth was a mere planet and was a sphere. Such concepts were they to evolve then today we would be travelling to the stars in star ships! Such a waste!

We have reason to be optimistic. Thanks to advances in the sciences we are able to fight disease far more effectively than our ancestors ever could. We've left our foot prints on the surface of our nearest celestial neighbour and used robots to sift through Martian soil. We have invented entirely new ways of sharing information across continents, and each day we learn more about the natural and social world. I know it might sound platitudinous, but I believe this just affirms how important it is to preserve knowledge and a spirit of free inquiry.

Wisely spoken! Cross your fingers and hope Curiosity makes a safe landing on Mars! Imagine if it discovers microbial life forms? Just think of the implications!

Now you understand why the Tower of Babel incident took place, don't you?
