Yes, yes, back by popular demand, this thread created by Gurney a few years back has returned. If you liked the Underailable Thread Part I, just wait until you see Part II! Action-packed, guaranteed....

Any random thing, bit of information, odd observation, joke, minutia, or anecdote is allowed. The only rule about the Underailable Thread Club is don't talk about the Underailable Thread Club.

My first observation is this....why on God's green Earth would ANYBODY name their daughter Fredericka? Discuss....lol
In Latin countries ,at least in France ,when the first child is a girl and the father has no faith that he will have a son, they have the very annoying habit of calling the child after the father ,then adding an 'e' ,or 'a', or somthing to make it more appropriate for the girl .
So you have Laurent become Laurence ,Claud become Claude ,Michel to Michelle , and much worse .

Deux = 2, Dieu= God

After watching the murder channel all day, I put Beauty and the Beast on. The cartoon version. Hubs looked at me like, "You're not serious..." I told him it's either this, or I find another nice Jonestown documentary to put on.

I don't get why he can watch Investigation Discovery ALL DAY, but if I put something on about Jonestown he leaves the room.

I think it's because he recognizes that the RSoF has some very cult-like tendencies and it makes him very uncomfortable. Sometimes, I point them out to him.

Nothing like reminiscing about some Kool Aid suicide in Guyana!

Jonestown is fascinating on so many levels. 1) The Peoples Temple originally started way back in the 1950s - more than 20 years before the Kool-Aid. 2) While still in the US they did a lot of good works - feeding the homeless, opening clinics for the poor, fighting for racial equality, etc A lot of the people who ended up dying in Guyana were people who'd been helped by The Peoples Temple back in the states. 3) Before they ever went to Guyana a lot of the members knew Jim Jones was out of his mind, but they kept going along with him because they believed in the vision of this socialist utopia, 4) Jones had held so many false suicide drills before the actual event that people probably thought it was just another drill.

But, here's the thing - Jim Jones was drug addicted, mentally ill, and probably demon possessed. He could not have done a thing without the help of some of his followers. The women who actually put the suicide plan into action. If you listen to the recording of the suicides - it's mostly a woman talking telling people what to do. There were the armed guards who first killed the congressman, his entourage, and the people who wanted to leave Jonestown, and then stopped people from escaping into the jungle instead of drinking the Kool Aid.

You actually dealt with a cult? Wow! I bet you have some stories there....

And it's the spectre of Jonestown, my own personal experience with an actual cult, and the RSoF that really worries me about this Benedict Option that some people have been banging on about.
