China already cancelled a bunch of Lunar New Year celebrations and have quarantined entire cities. It's popping up all over the world, though, from various travellers.

Certainly not everyone who gets it dies. It's to early to tell how high the mortality is, since the deaths of course lag behind the infections.

As far as I've read, most people who died are either old or otherwise have some kind of preexisting condition. Young, healthy adults have a very high survival rate.

Another problem is that while the virus is spreading, it can always mutate and turn more or less deadly. If there is a virus strain that is more contagious, but less deadly, it might "outperform" the more deadly strains. That's what often happens with pandemics, with people who feel relatively well going out and spreading their disease while those heavily afflicted stay at home or go to hospitals.

The spanish flu (the last really big pandemic) was an exception because it coincided with the first world war, where the healthy had to stay in the trenches and the heavily affected were shipped back to hospitals, were they spread their sickness.

The worst part is most of the information is being released by the Chinese government, who has a long history of hiding anything like this. Reports from people on the ground say infected is easily at least 50,000 already, and we know of 81 deaths. These numbers are very likely to be low estimates.

Now China is building emergency hospitals, Mongolia and North Korea have closed their Chinese borders, and we find out that the Chinese don't really know how many people are infected, because they don't have anywhere near enough test kits...
