(Updated 1/27 with note about checking on KN95 quality)

It appears as much as 10% of people that get Covid are still suffering severe effects months later (including among people that only had mild symptoms) --
Long haulers: Why some people experience long-term coronavirus symptoms

Ongoing effects of long haul Covid:Coughing, Ongoing, sometimes debilitating, fatigue, Body aches, Joint pain, Shortness of breath, Loss of taste and smell — even if this didn’t occur during the height of illness, Difficulty sleeping, Headaches, Brain fog

It's urgently important to wear a mask that fits tight enough and is of good quality and/or multilayer enough to reduce the amount of virus-laden droplets (which are far larger than viral particles) you inhale to a tiny or negligible amount. (see more below)

LONDON – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned Friday that a coronavirus variant first detected in the country in September may be around 30% more deadly than previous versions of the disease.

Johnson unveiled the worrying statistic in a London new conference.

British scientists already had concluded that the variant, known as B.1.1.7, spread between 30%-70% faster than the previous dominant coronavirus strain in the U.K.

New COVID variant discovered in UK may be 30% more lethal: British PM
--------

Both spreading easier and more deadly on average for those that get it.

It's already here in the U.S. widely.

-------------

A new variant of the coronavirus believed to spread more easily has forced the United Kingdom into another lockdown and been detected in at least 33 countries, including the United States. Many of the U.S. cases have no known travel history — meaning the strain is spreading throughout communities. The variant, known as B.1.1.7, is not expected to be resistant to the vaccines rolled out in December, though scientists are racing to learn more about the mutation — and where it has already spread. Below is a primer for the public-health and political ramifications of the concerning development.

The B.1.1.7 (U.K.) strain has been found in at least 21 U.S. states
New COVID Strain Spreading Across U.S.: What We Know

----------------

A more contagious and more deadly Covid, now in the U.S. and spreading.

So, in addition to the emerging realization that as much as 10% of survivors are "long haulers" that suffer for months....the new variants can kill more people, sooner.

How to protect yourself:

Wear a mask in all situations recommended, and at the minimum you need a mask that is tight fitting around the edges and also adequately dense and/or multiple layer. Since even better cloth masks don't always fit tightly or have enough layers of densely woven, often adding a 2nd mask (even a surgical style mask) on top helps.

(Why even non-medical grade masks correctly worn and with layers are far better than no mask or only thin fabric:
Having a sufficient mask to block the great majority of floating droplets emitted from a sneeze or cough or loud talking -- such masking greatly reduces the amount of virus you get exposed to if you do get exposed, since the main load of virus is in droplets, which are far larger than the virus itself. Getting exposed to a low amount is very much better than getting exposed to a high amount. Doctors have observed that those that got exposed while wearing masks get milder cases.)

Groups needing special effort:
As we know, those over 50 have increasing risk on average with age. But, even those under 50 that have other common situations need special effort.
Other factors:
Workers exposed to a lot of people such as in a grocery store or other service business with many customers
or being significantly overweight or having hypertension or diabetes, reduced immune function, asthma...or even type A blood.
Additional conditions warranting extra effort include cancer, pregnancy, heart disease, and more:
COVID-19 and Your Health

People in these groups should not only have a multiple-layer tight fitting mask -- which everyone needs -- but also I'd recommend those with more risk obtain for their base layer mask a tight fitting KN-95 of good quality (which you have to check on).

"KN-95 are Chinese N-95's but some of them are of inferior quality and are not tested as rigorously as those made in America or those made by name brand companies such as Honeywell or 3M."
(as Richard reminded us below)

One way to compensate for this varied quality is to find out which ones are of known good quality (a friend researched and found one type of good quality and we got that one, but there is more than 1 brand).

Also, there are many N95 fakes to beware of when shopping:
Counterfeit Respirators / Misrepresentation of NIOSH-Approval | NPPTL | NIOSH | CDC

Also, for everyone, good health habits like getting enough sleep, some exercise, taking some modest amount of vitamin D (usually 1,000 iu is plenty) will aid their immune function.

With all of the above, most people can improve their odds against Covid.

I work in healthcare and face Covid every day. It's sad seeing some on this forum discredit the use of masks.

You're definitely right about it being tight fitting. It's one of the most important aspects. The specialist masks we use, we have to be fit tested. Basically a series of checks to determine if that specific brand and model of mask creates a secure seal on our face and also that we can't taste a solution they spray into a bag we wear over our head, testing that the seal is indeed secure.

Not everyone has those masks as they're expensive and hard to source, but it still highlights the necessity of the mask fitting well. We wear them principally to protect us whilst in direct contact with Covid patients and/or whilst undertaking aerosol generating procedures where the virus can literally be in the air you breathe.

In terms of normal masks people have bought, they still definitely help so long as they're worn properly. That is to say they're worn covering both the mouth and nose securely with as few and small gaps as possible. Next is avoiding touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth areas. Additionally, social distancing is very important because whilst a mask offers protection, it isn't 100%. Finally, be conscious of surface contacts, e.g. After using public door handles, wash or sanitise your hands. Same goes for limiting contact with others' possessions, like someone passing you their phone to look at something, instead ask them to hold it or just send it to you.

Little things go a long way.

Damn that's tough. Gotta do our part to stay safe. I've been double masking it and only going to the store at 7 in the morning when I do go. Lot of people in my household not in good health myself included .
Take care and hopefully people start taking it more seriously . This new strain they talking about sounds crazy. More infectious ....smh

I was able to buy five Moldex P100 masks from an industrial supplier. They cost me about 13 dollars a piece but are worth every penny. (large and a bit unsightly, but they are molded with a great type of strap and design}. Previously, I had a couple of 3M N-95 masks, that I rotated and reused for several months. Finally the rubber bands frayed. You can still buy these on ebay though I would be careful about who or where they are coming from. I know it takes supply away from hospitals, but there is nothing illegal about buying quality masks if you can find them. Ethically, I do not feel challenged either since I know that many states hoard their PPE equipment. KN-95 are Chinese N-95's but some of them are of inferior quality and are not tested as rigorously as those made in America or those made by name brand companies such as Honeywell or 3M. I also prefer an external valve on my mask, but such valves do exhale more particles than the same mask with no valve. Such valves would be less beneficial if someone had covid and was using them. They do offer great protection to the wearer though.
With the new variants a quality mask is even more important. I also wear mine 100% of the time in indoor public spaces.

Yes, the external valve is found to entirely lose the benefit of helping protect other people when worn by someone that gets the virus and is shedding it (often without being aware). It's found to be just like having no mask for the purpose of protecting others. But one way to change that is to have a cloth mask for example over the n95 valve mask, so that the valve emissions hit the cloth mask. This would only help though if the cloth mask has a reasonably tight fit onto the n95 periphery so that it would trap most all droplets coming out of the valve.

I want to highlight the useful point you remind us about regarding kn95 varied quality. So, I'll post that separately and I think its good to add to the OP also.

When the winter surge came, we did finally do one new thing.

What was different:
it seemed to me that mask wearing went up closer to universal.

Maybe we saw 98%-99%+ of people wore a mask instead of just 92% or 95%:

We beat back the winter surge recently:

Coronavirus Briefing: What Happened Today

and
  • Hospitalizations due to Covid-19 fell to their lowest level since Dec. 7.
Covid-19 Live Updates: Hospitalizations Steadily Decline - WSJ.com

But I don't know whether this might be only a temporary reprieve -- often people get tired of the effort in the past and stop being so careful.

If people get careless with the very high level of 99% wearing masks and it goes down to 95%, and the new more contagious British variant spreads too fast, we could see the good trend reverse, and new cases rise....

That's only a maybe.

We might win that race of masks and vaccines vs the British variant....

It's a key moment, February/March, the remainder of winter....
