  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Dems would love to debate an extension.
There have been bipartisan bills introduced.
The GOP won't let them come to the floor for debate.

1. The debate was scheduled more than 2 months ago to take place in November -
2. The Government has to be OPEN for something to come to the floor for debate.

What does that have to do with Schumer holding the country hostage so he can get 1,500,000,000,000 (1.5 Trillion) in additional spending?
The shutdown, just like the 2013 GOP shutdown is over healthcare.
Again, if the GOP has a plan other than killing coverage, increasing costs, and closing hospitals let's here it.
You seem to be on top of it, how about placing that plan here ____________________.

Democrats’ $1.5T Power Play Risks Essential Federal Services

“Democrats, unable to slow Trump’s agenda or even garner much media attention for their efforts, are under increasing pressure to risk a shutdown,” Bloomberg reported. The outlet noted that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer backed down from a similar threat in March but is taking a harder line this time.

The New York Times confirmed that “Senate Democrats on Friday blocked Republicans’ plan to keep federal funding flowing past a Sept. 30 deadline, demanding concessions on health care and other issues in exchange for their support for a measure needed to avert a government shutdown.”

Democratic senators told The Hill that defeating the Republican proposal is “necessary” to “send a message” to President Trump. Some party members view the shutdown threat as their only leverage against the administration.

Shutdown threatens rural hospitals, veterans' care as Democrats block GOP plan, Emmer warns

EXCLUSIVE: The No. 3 House Republican is accusing Democrats of making a hypocritical argument in their resistance to the GOP's federal funding bill.

The government shutdown is in its 14th day with Republicans and Democrats still unable to agree on a path forward. The Trump administration is taking steps to prevent the military from missing paychecks this week, while also beginning to lay off scores of federal workers amid the standoff.

Democrats’ $1.5 trillion demand to keep the gov’t open sets a new record for gall

Senate Democrats this week said they’d let the Republican short-term spending bill pass, and so avoid a government shutdown as of Oct. 1, for the low, low price of . . . $1.5 trillion.
Yep, they demand that much added spending, which means $1.5 trillion in new federal debt over the next decade.
To add a single month of uninterupted federal operations, the GOP must agree to:
1) permanently extend Biden-era ObamaCare subsidies that now sunset Dec. 31, and
2) gut the health savings just passed in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and
3) unfreeze $5 billion in foreign aid that President Donald Trump recently stopped while Congress was on (yet another) vacation.
Republicans didn’t bite, so Senate Dems this week used the filibuster to block the GOP’s “stopgap” bill, setting up a game of chicken when Congress gets back to work at the very end of the month.
Listen. Trump has said since 2016 he has a plan that is better and cheaper than the ACA. If your concern is the cost, this plan should redress that. But we both know that claim is just more Trump hooey. Again. The ACA benefits mostly those residing in red areas. What's the plan?

Of course there is no plan because as Trump said, “no one knew healthcare was so complicated “.

One thing we can he sure of when it comes to trump, he is shallow.

You should tell that to the US Senate. They have been meeting several times a week for the whole time the House has been hiding from the Epstein resolution.

Listen - healthcare is the cause celeb- but not the reason for the shutdown -

It was already scheduled for debate.

It's a power grab.

That's the real plan

Doesn't answer my question. How in the world is making sure people have healthcare and a hospital to go to a power grab?
Here's a power grab. Cutting that money to pay for tax cuts for the rich.

Your question would lead us on an off topic side journey

The Schumer shutdown is a 1.5 trillion dollar power grab.

Last time I am repeating it - the issue was scheduled for debate in November BEFORE Chuck Schumer shut down the government because the Democratic party lost in the legislative process. They are attempting to circumvent the Democratic process by holding the Government hostage

The activities of the Senate look like most days they are in session. A whole lot more than voting, including a lot of debate (OK, actually speaches about bills and issues, but that is how they "debate" in the Senate).

Here is a link to Wednesday's activity in the Senate:

Unfortunately, the Senate Daily Press gallery that compiles these reports uses a relative indexing, so page "2" is the day before (currently Wed. Oct 15) the more recent (currently Thurs. Oct 16) session. When the Senate meets on Monday this will become page 3, etc. But if you click backward from the bottom of the page you can browse what the Senate has been up to. Some days they do more, sometimes less. But they are certainly doing more that the "pro forma" sessions of the House.

It was scheduled - why didn't they wait?

Answer - it is a 1.5 trillion dollar power grab because legislatively they cannot win. Forget the Democratic process - forget the longstanding rules - just give them what they want.

Your picture is incorrect - It isn't Lucy holding a ball - it's Chuck holding a bag

There is nothing "scheduled" as far as I know. Source that claim.

Open enrollment starts in November. The rates will have been set high to compensate for the subsidies having been slashed. The idea is to get this solved before open enrollment starts; waiting while disrupt the whole marketplace.

Medicaid and Medicare have already been slashed which means that rural hospitals are already at extreme risk of failing.

The Mississippi Division of Medicaid is anticipated to operate off a total budget of $8.4 billion for the new fiscal year which begins July 1. Of that total, the state’s total support sits at about $969.9 million, Senate Medicaid Committee Chair Kevin Blackwell (R) told his colleagues during the recent special session.

...While Mississippi has not expanded its Medicaid program, it does receive one of the highest, if not the highest, Federal Medicaid Assistance Percentage (FMAP) match rates. The state division’s 2024 report shows the program was at 78.42 percent for fiscal year 2024.

Even the GOP House Republican from the FOXnews blurb acknowledges the BBB will shutter rural hospitals.
It's amazing to me they now realize what they have been long warned about.
