  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Republicans are unwilling to bend even though they have everything else they want.
The people wanted what the Republican are trying to do, which is keep the government open and reduce waste. That's why Trump and Republicans were voted in by the People. But in this case, it only takes no more than 7 democrats to shut down the government, and they used this opportunity to do just that.

Seems like to me that the Democrats are unwilling to bend, unwilling to reopen the government, and then negotiate the changes in legislation that they want.

That would require democrats to trust the republicans to negotiate in good faith after they got what they wanted.

We've all been down that road before, we know where it goes.

Let's face it, the only reason republicans are saying they will negotiate is because they know that democrats usually cave. Because they usually do.

As it stands, the only chance that democrats have to save health care subsidies for those who need it is to stand firm.

Obama already fixed it, remember?

As proud as he is of the ACA, President Obama never intended for the law to remain as is. During a speech in the final months of his presidency, he called the ACA, “a first step” and compared it to “buying a starter home….you hope that over time you make some improvements.

No matter how much they try blaming republicans, the Schumer shutdown is the democrats doing.

It looks like they were counting on the democrats folding, as they usually do. What they didn't imagine was the democrats actually sticking to their guns and holding firm. So they have no choice but to blame democrats for the shutdown, with the probable hope that they will cave in eventually. So far, though, that plan doesn't seem to be working.

-- A2SG, they will do anything to avoid discussing the loss of health care for so many people...

The democrats couldn’t do it if the republicans weren’t also onboard with shutting down the government.

They wanted the demise of healthcare?

They wanted smaller government and this is an opportunity for Trump to say , “You’re fired!” to more government employees.

Do you remember all the amendments the GOP made to the bill and then still refused to vote for it? They have been chipping away at it ever since without proposing anything better to replace it. The Democrats did vote for the CR back in April with the understanding that there would be negotiations on healthcare which have not happened because the Magas reneged.

The GOP doesn't like it. It's why they shut the government down before. So again, should just CR the shutdown. Then unveil that Trump concept of a plan to fix healthcare. And if legit, the Dems will be on board.

Nope - I disagree - the ridiculousness of the Democrats wanting a 1,500,000,000,000.00 INCREASE in spending with no debate, just give it to us or we keep the government closed is evidence enough that Schumer and his cronies would never agree to anything the Republicans offer -

Heritiage/Romney/Obamacare was dependent on all state participating.
The more people in the pool, the cheaper the premiums.
One third of the initially states refused. You can guess which ones.
Now most of the people dependent on Heritage/Romney/Obamacare reside in red states.

What does that have to do with Schumer holding the country hostage so he can get 1,500,000,000,000 (1.5 Trillion) in additional spending?

The Dems would love to debate an extension.
There have been bipartisan bills introduced.
The GOP won't let them come to the floor for debate.

Democrats’ $1.5 trillion demand to keep the gov’t open sets a new record for gall

Senate Democrats this week said they’d let the Republican short-term spending bill pass, and so avoid a government shutdown as of Oct. 1, for the low, low price of . . . $1.5 trillion.
Yep, they demand that much added spending, which means $1.5 trillion in new federal debt over the next decade.
To add a single month of uninterupted federal operations, the GOP must agree to:
1) permanently extend Biden-era ObamaCare subsidies that now sunset Dec. 31, and
2) gut the health savings just passed in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and
3) unfreeze $5 billion in foreign aid that President Donald Trump recently stopped while Congress was on (yet another) vacation.
Republicans didn’t bite, so Senate Dems this week used the filibuster to block the GOP’s “stopgap” bill, setting up a game of chicken when Congress gets back to work at the very end of the month.
