Is moving out a practical option for you?

Moving out may seem like a cop-out to a lot of people, but the reality is that most people's relationships with their parents take off like a plane. What I would do is pray about moving out, for God to open that up. And pray in the meantime for the strength and patience to honor your mother, since you are living in her house.

Unfortuantly you will always be at odds with any family member who is not a believer, this is what Jesus says when he said "I have not come to bring peace but a sword, to turn father against son mother against daughter..etc," the only advice I can give is similar to the above post, honour your mother be obediant to her in all things that do not pertain to christianity. It will be difficult, but before her you are an ambassador of God, never forget that in all you do!

If it does become unbearable then it may well be better to move out.

mark :)

wow, I couldn't agree more!

After all, God may have it that your mother comes to Christ with you as a witness!

You never know. I'd just pray and pray and pray.

BTW, I'll be praying for you!

Yeah, I'd definitely pray about whether to move or not. God will tell you what should happen.

I think it's also important (for everyone else giving advice) to remember that moving out does not mean you won't see your mother again. I'm sure you'll still be in regular contact with her, and can be a witness for God even though you're not living under the same roof as her.

Because he should explore his options. Moving out will not accomplish much. PM me lambofgod if you want to know more.

I find it odd that you lauded my post which gave the same advice, yet you trashed hers. The only difference was that my advice was a little more prayerful. Moving out helps relationships between parents and their grown children so much. What is good for a relationship is usually what is good for a witness to that person.

Try not to move out unless it is really, really unbearable. If you move out, who will be the testimony of Christ for your mother? (I am the first christian in my family, suffer lots of similar stuffs, got real mad with my mother, she used to mock Jesus non-ceasingly before me, etc, but today, she is starting to see that God changes me. And she is more open... a little bit more open towards Him.) Don't move out because if you do, your mother, your family may never have another person in their lives to tell them about Jesus.

Worst, they may even think Jesus take you away from them. And grow to hate Jesus for it.

(I am from a tradtional chinese family, where the children will burn incense for the parents when they die. My parents thought Jesus took a child away from burning incense for them when I first believed Him, and hated the fact that I was a christian. I tried to win them over by good behavior, and emphsizing to them the commandment to honor my father and my mother, and how Jesus did not make their daughter less filial but more filial.)

Every family situation is different.

I am also the only Christian in my family. But I "moved out" before I became a Christian - when I went away to college. (I became a Christian while a university student.) Immediately after graduating from university, I moved again - TO ASIA. :D Hehehe, the other side of the world. ;) (I'm from the USA.)

Sure my folks aren't thrilled that I'm in Asia, but it's not cuz they want me close to home; they just want me working in the States towards an IRA, retirement, financial security, etc etc. But I've been in Asia for 5 years (first and mostly Korea, now Japan), and they accept that. I have a good relationship with my family - I really love them and I pray for their salvation. But I know God has called me here for this period of my life. I'm following God, and I trust that He will take care of my family in the meantime.

Keep praying about what God wants you to do, and don't be afraid to take whatever steps you hear from God.

God bless!
-haya

ps. I say they aren't "thrilled" with me being here - but at the same time they respect me for it. My mom is always eager to hear me tell her about different things here - foods, holidays, etc.
