Who's Henry Beard?
:) He's a guy who wrote a couple of hilarious books back in the early 1990s:

Some of us do know our Latin, from Caesar to Cicero to Ovid. Maybe a bit rusty to translate a Collect on the fly, but able to understand the bulk of the Latin in a Latin mass. It's just not that hard even for someone who never studied it in high school. I mean two year olds mastered it way back when.
The thing is, two year olds are considerably better at learning a language than adults. It's debated as to how much of this is their brains being more adept at it than older people and how much is them having a more favorable set of circumstances (babies have guaranteed total immersion), but whether it's their brains or circumstances, the fact of the matter is that two year olds are better at learning languages than adults. So a two year old back then would actually be substantially advantaged in learning Latin compared to anyone today.
