Which would be a heresy, something the Church beleived & taught for 2000 years or something only made popular after the protestant revolt?
Something that violates the clear teaching of scripture. In this case, the heresy that they were trying to combat, that Jesus is not God, and the heresy that they introduced to combat the heresy that Jesus is not God, the heresy that Mary is God's mother.
I'll trust the early Church fathers of whom some even knew the apostles themselves.
That's nice. It doesn't matter who someone knows. If their teaching doesn't line up with scripture, then it's heresy.
