The history of this whole mess is well documented.
Trump illegally took both unclassified and classified documents with him when he left office.
The archives knew that there were missing unclassified documents ( hard to forget Trumps fake storm prediction he sharpied on a map because he somehow cannot admit he made a mistake).
After months of meetings between the archives and Trunps folks, some boxes were finally turned over. The archives found almost 200 classified documents, but also knew there were still unclassified documents Trump was still illegally witholding.
Had trump returned all secret material once the archivess noticed them, he never would have been prosecuted.
Then the government gets a subpena to obtain the remaining documents. Trump hands over more boxed, claims that is all of them, but still does not turn everything over. Had he turned over all of the documents at this point, he probably would not be prosecuted. But he doesn’t.
Finally there is a search warrant obtained through a legitimate process, and that search warrant is executed. More classified documents are found.
Regardless of whether trump was deliberately showing the material to people, the search warrant was legit. Trump was violating the espionage act by refusing to hand over classified material that he was holding illegally. Many people could have obtained access to those documents - we may never know who all has seen or perhaps even taken photos of them. Hopefully zero. He was given several oppotunities to come clean, but he refused.
If the evidence holds up that Trump was showing the material to people, then that just adds to the counts in the indictment.
The people that defend his actions clearly believe Trump should be above the law. I wonder if they really want a democracy, or would prefer some other form of government - such as one where the president can singlehandedly throw out the results of a free and fair election and just stay in power.
