Voting rights: Democratic-led states eye expansion amid GOP push to restrict access - CNNPolitics

With the advent of Georgia moving to change some of it's voting laws, the Left has moved to boycott the All Star game from Atlanta Georgia.

But who are they hurting here?

Atlanta Georgia has long been known as a center of black wealth, higher education, political power and culture; a cradle of the Civil Rights Movement and the home of Martin Luther King Jr. It has often been called a "black mecca".

And according to a 2015 analysis of census data, Metro Atlanta had the greatest numerical gain in new black residents than any metropolitan area in the U.S. This is a city with about half the population that is black.

That's right everyone, the Left just took all that money and jobs from their own black voters by not allowing the All Star game there.

I think the idea is to sustain a small loss in hopes of securing a greater gain Boycotting the games will force the GOP's hand. I hope the tactic pays off.

I disagreed with the decision. To me, it's nothing more than petty politics. I don't know enough about the state voting laws to have any real position on them. But I do think that once the league made a commitment to play the game there that it should have stuck by it. If the league were still contemplating whether to allow the Braves to host the game and wanted to use the law as a factor in its decision, that would be more acceptable.

Too late for this game it's being moved to Dodger's Stadium. The Republican legislators in Georgia will only dig in, winning elections is more important to them.

I’ve been involved in similar types of successful boycotts. In labor disputes. Yes, it requires risking a short term personal loss for some. That’s inherent in all power struggles. MLK, who you invoked, spent time in jail. He suffered greatly for a cause. I’m sure glad he did.

Then you don't know if the move is "nothing more than petty politics."

The estimate is that the loss of the All-Star game will deprive Atlanta of as much as 190 million dollars.

To make it illegal to give food and drink to people waiting in line to vote is draconian imho, and probably unconstitutional. That is one of the reasons MLB is pulling out. That is one reason other industries are protesting. The days of Jim Crow should not be resurrected.

Georgia voting bill details: What to know about controversial SB 202 (savannahnow.com)

From what I can gather, the bill:

    1. Shortens the absentee ballots to 11 weeks prior to election.

    2. Runoff shortened to 4 weeks instead of 9 weeks

    3. Absentee ballots counted by 5 pm day after elections

    4. bans mobile voting units except in times of emergency

    5. Drop box ballots will only be used with early voting

    6. Passing out food or drinks is prohibited EXCEPT by poll workers.

    7. Legislators will appoint a chair of state election board instead of the Secretary of the State assuming the roll.

I think the overall intent is to prevent cheating and have a result back in a timely manner. The only head scratcher is the eating and drinking ban. I assume it is so voters are not swayed by people to vote a certain way for food and drink. Otherwise, I have no idea why it is there, but the rest all seems reasonable.

Did you not read my post? It's not relevant what the law says because the league had already made a commitment and to back out now is nothing than cheap games.

You know. It is amazing to me that people (even Christians) don't see any wrong in Georgia's oppressive and even racist voting law. Please do not take my statement personally. If the shoe does not fit you there is no need to wear it. There was no need to change the law. Investigators have not found there to be any widespread cheating or fraud in Georgia. And why is it that ONLY Republicans see the need to change the voting law. IMHO this law is cheating because it disenfranchises a large swath of the electorate.

How is the voting law oppressive?

With the All Star game being moved, his is where there is all headed. It is called an ESG score

Social Justice as a Social Factor | S&P Global

The ESG score will rate companies on two main topics, social justice issues and environmental concerns.

For example, if Facebook allows conservatives to voice their concerns, such as election fraud, then it will lower their ESG score which will ultimately effect their bottom line as government and other corporations will ding them for it.

This will probably filter down to churches and people. In China they rate people based on what they believe and say, and if it is deemed "racist" or "unjust" or "untrue", then your score falls. And if your score falls too much, you may be restricted from doing things like flying on a plane. In church, if you give a sermon on homosexual activity being an abomination before God, you may lose your church, etc.

As for the election fraud charges about 30% of democrats believe happened and close to 100% of conservatives believe happened, I wish the courts had heard conservatives out on the issue rather than ignore it. In fact, I feel that they had a Constitutional duty to hear the case out and let the facts be presented to us all. Although the court system is far from perfect, it was the best way to shed light and transparency on the election. After all, every election has cheating. The only questions is, did the cheating effect the outcome?

The courts hearing those cases would not have deterred Republicans from instituting draconian laws aimed at making voting hard for minorities. They think they cannot win unless they do this. Minorities are not monolithic. That is why I am Independent. I vote for whom I think will do the best job for the people. As Americans, our democratic republic is is suppose to be inclusive for all of our citizens.

It's what it the rule in most states and if it were not, a lot more than water and a sandwich would be what was being passed to the people on line. Bribes, for instance.

So once again, we have a perfectly sensible and normal policy being attacked, falsely, as some sort of Republican attempt to resurrect Jim Eagle (to quote the line that Biden's speechwriter thought was soooo funny) or to limit the number of voters. Both of those notions are baseless.

What's more amazing to me is that many Christians are criticizing individuals and organizations for putting their morals and sense of justice ahead of profits.

Um! Jim Eagle?? It is funny that you would say bribes go on in the lines. There never has been any accusations, or lawsuits, in the past regarding bribes in the lines. Now that is a baseless notion. Only now after Republicans got scared and started perpetrating the big lie that the 2020 election was stolen.

Maybe if this policy were very inconvenient or costly, but that's not the case. And as others have mentioned, we as a society prohibit or require all sorts of things because there's a real possibility of a wrong being committed if no precautions are taken. We do not, for example, allow unknown persons to board international fights even though mid-air hijackings have been very infrequent in recent years.
