Has anyone seen the Caribou/Manitoba DVD? I watched about 4 videos at a friend's place and was blown away.

Well initially, Illinois had enough songs to be a double album. So the b-sides aren't really like crappy leftovers, they are more like songs that didn't make it on the record because of space limitations.

Apparently Seven Swans was a b-sides record. And that is by far my favorite of Sufjan's releases. So, who know's, maybe it'll be really good.

Illinois DId have enough songs to be a doubt album. Of course, i'd feel preeeettty gyped if i got an album with 11 songs and the whole thing was only 21 minutes long.
I love the thing, don't get me wrong but the tracks on that album were SHORT. There is one epic, one or two around 3-4 minutes...the rest, well under 2mins

And I dunno about SS being at the can do no wrong.

I have had half a dozen friends claim that his album was overplayed and hefell far out of favour with them all.
He has built up this hype around a virtually impossible project that he basically has assigned himself to for the rest of his life. And while it's cool and i'm sure it'll be an amazing project the dude is stuck with it....unless he gives up.

ps..in case y'all didn't know about them, SS fans would prolly do themselves well to listen to "Iron and Wine".
They're a fine fine band.

Actually, 15 of the songs on Illinois are over two minutes in length. And most of those are in the 3-6 min. range.

And I dunno about SS being at the can do no wrong.

I tend to agree. A Sun Came is hit-or-miss the whole way through. Though there are definitely a few keepers on there.

I think Enjoy Your Rabbit and Seven Swans are pretty tight as they are. I'm not sure if those could be improved on.

Illinois and Michigan have their weak spots (moreso the latter than the former), but I still think they are both pretty strong releases.

Well that's not really his fault that your friends over played the album. Moderation people, c'mon.

I really don't think he's stuck with anything. As I understand it, the concept of a fifty states project came after the Michigan album was recorded. He just decided it was something to aim for. He's not contractually obligated to make an album for every state. If at some point he decides, "hey, i've exhausted this fifty states thing enough" and then leaves and writes short fiction in rural New York under a pseudonym or something I don't think people are going to feel betrayed. It's an impossible task -- any rational being can ralize that if he puts out a different state album every other year, that would be a 100 year project. And the probability of him living that long is slim, let alone living that long and still making relevant music.

If anything, I think the fifty states project is a framework. Many great musicians use constraints to challenge themselves and likewise gain inspiration. I think the 50 States Project is not an actual goal that he is hoping to accomplish, but a means of challenging himself to write good music with a relevant message that captures the essense and atmosphere of a specific place.

At least, that's how I see it.

I agree. Sam Beam is a great songwriter. I saw him on the Iron & Wine/Calexico tour a few months back. The show was four hours. I don't know how they can play that long every night of a tour. It must be exhausting.
