The Decemberists, the Futureheads, Arctic Monkeys, Metric, Stars, Sleater-Kinney, The Rapture, and of course Radiohead. Because everyone should listen to Radiohead.

I could upload any songs or albums of any of the mentioned artists if you'd like.
As for rock, I'd say Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Neutral Milk Hotel, Ween, Animal Collective (that might be a stretch to call them rock), The Decemberists, and Yo La Tengo.

I think that folk is really where it's at though: Joanna Newsom, Sufjan Stevens, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Devendra Banhart, Wilco, Andrew Bird,
Chase Jedick, Bright Eyes, Elliott Smith, Mason Jennings, The Mountain Goats, etc.
Thanks for all bands. I'll be checking them all out. (Except for Artic Monkey and Futureheads, both who i dont like.)

Ive got all Radiohead albums

i can't stand Why?'s pseudo sing-song voice. It was good when combined with cLOUDDEAD's harmonizing, which also had more of a rap delivery... but on Elephant Eyelash it just really really grates me.
Have you listened to any of his Hymie's Basement work. That's Why? and Fog and it's a little more rap w/piano and lots of harmonization.

I've always thought his voice sounds more like he talks at different pitches rather than really trying to sing. That might not make sense, but the only song that I can think of that is really him flatout singing is Waterfalls, which is one of my least favorite tracks on the album.

Eh, to each his own. At least we can both agree cLOUDDEAD is great.

The first half of feels is crap, too.
I'm guessing you are more a fan of the folky Animal Collective and not the poppy Animal Collective then. I'm a fan of both, it's when they start getting long-winded and sparse that they lose me (like the second half of feels).

You'd probably like the EP they did with Vashti Bunyan. Have you heard that? What did you think of Sung Tongs?

The new Vashti Bunyan album is really good too actually. I don't know if that's been discussed on here or not. But I really like it.

Sung Tongs is pretty decent. Loved the Prospect Hummer EP. Animal Collective is one of those bands, I think, who is rather all over the place, sound wise, and it's really hard to enjoy everything they dabble in.

Pattern Is Movement, however, is one of those bands who everything they touch turns to gold. Gosh, that must be annoying when they try to kiss their mother.

I liked that album, too. But not anymore. Lately,indie/folky music annoys the crap out of me, especially Bright Eyes. He sucks. Bleh. Why? sucks, too. Elbow sucks, too. Everything sucks.

Have you heard any Akron Family? I've just been getting into them recently.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on Why?. Seriously, I think Elephant Eyelash, Oaklandazulasylum, and his EPs are all pretty terrific. And his Hymie's Basement stuff. And his cLOUDDEAD material. And his cLOUDDEAD couterpart's (Subtle, Doseone, and Odd Nosedam) stuff. Obviously some of it is better than others, but seriously, I've been listening to it for months and I'm still not tired of it.

I haven't really listened to Elbow enough to agree or disagree with you.

Have you heard the Secret Machines at all? Now Here Is Nowhere has some pretty stunning tracks on it.

Or just listen to the self-titled Crooked Fingers record. That album is pretty amazing.

I have Dignity and Shame, and for the most part I think it's ho-hum.

I don't mind being called black, even if I'm white. Racist.

I know I'm probably alone on this, but I like Bright Eyes. Conor is a damn fine lyricist, IMO. "It's Cool, We Can Still Be Friends" is one of my favorite tracks of all time.

Dignity and Shame is pretty boring, although I really like the song Andalucia. The self-titled album is much, much, much better.

It may just not be your thing. But I'd give the self-titled album a listen before you write them off entirely.

This thread makes me sick. Thanks to indie "rock," rock & roll is well and truly dead in 2006, and has been for some time now. I'm amazed that any of you can still sleep at night after hailing that douche-bag from Bright Eyes as the "Next Bob Dylan." Blasphemers.

I don't think anyone here compared Bright Eyes to Dylan.

And to say that indie rock killed rock & roll is just ignorant, as folk, experimental, hiphop, psychedelic, metal, rock, punk, hard rock, and pop can all technically fit under the "indie" umbrella, so long as the artist is not in the mainstream (and even that is changing as bands like Franz Ferdinand and the Arcade Fire have been getting crossover success).

If you're upset that rock or punk or whatever other genre people are upset about being dead, don't blame an abstract label that people haphazardly throw on bands that have an unconventional sound, blame the heartless music industry, the radio station bribery, or the lack of talented individuals willing to make some good music that fits into the [insert genre name here] category.

I've always thought that the "roll" in rock & roll died with Bob Seger's career.

I didn't say that Conor was the "next Dylan", but then again, I can name several artists who I believe are better lyricists than Zimmerman.
