The Indie Thread (2)

I listened to them last week from the link off of Decapolis. In "The Way, the Truth, The Lightning", I really dig the instrumental breakout about 2/3 of the way through. "Sand Houses" and "Shamgar" are fun as well. They all have a Danielson & Half-Handed Cloud feel.

Yeah, we are both fans of Danielson and HHC, and since we only had a limited time in the studio, we figure it would be best to keep things in a similar vein -- short and sweet. Nothing too crazy, but it was alot of fun.

For the record, Animal Collective is playing here tonight for $14 at one of my favorite venues and I am skipping it because I have a paper due tomorrow. This saddens me.

Well, there are some other reasons, I cannot go too.

I was going to write the paper Sunday night, but I came back from Pennsylvania and my room looked like this:

So, as you can imagine, I spent most of the evening cleaning up napkins. Our ceiling is still covered in sticky tack.

I also would have to drive into Boston and go to the show alone, because the guy I was going with can't go anymore either.

Plus, after spending $35 on a New Pornographers/Belle&Sebastian ticket, I think I'd feel guilty spending money on another show in the same week.

And in addition to the paper, I have a bunch of political, theological, music, and art related articles to edit for our last school paper before spring break, which I have been putting off since this weekend.

What's the topic?

Historical analysis of society's presuppositions regarding Christianity and intellectualism.

It's an interesting topic -- one that I will enjoy writing about; but I can't help but regret not going to see the show tonight. I keep hearing how great they are live.

Oh well. Maybe next time.

Yep, you probably need to write that one yourself.

Oddly enough, one of my friends IMed me saying that AC's playing in Chicago this weekend. Perhaps I'll end up going. I can't really think of another artist I'd rather see live.

Also...how was Sigur Ros, Jordan?

Just imagine a room covered from floor to ceiling (literally) with napkins. Then imagine a giant pool of napkins all across the floor. Then imagine every book, cd, and dvd in the room giftwrapped in napkins. That's pretty much it. I have some pictures of it on Facebook if you are really desperate to see it. I already regret not going to Animal Collective. You should avoid such feelings and be sure to go see them and tell me all about it. A vicarious experience is still an experience.

Neko Case is all over this month's SPIN magazine. Which is awesome. Look for the one with the crappy My Chemical Romance cover (2nd one of THOSE this year...grrrrrr).

I saw Belle & Sebastian and the New Pornographers last night.

It was so much fun. I was a little upset that Dan and Neko weren't there. They had Kathryn Calder, who played keys and sang on Twin Cinema sing the female parts and I was pretty pretty impressed. She filled in for Neko Case as well as anyone could hope to.

I must say, I think I was most impressed with Belle & Sebastian though. I mean, I'm a huge New Pornographers fan, but Belle & Sebastian were ridiculously tight live. Plus they played two songs from the Books EP, which is one of my favorite EPs ever.

It was just a lot of fun. It even made me feel a little better after missing Animal Collective last week.

Art Brut, Neko Case, and Subtle (guy from cLOUDDEAD that isn't why?) are all playing in the next month or so. I'm trying to decide which ones of those I should attend. I don't know if I have money to go to all three.

And this week between excessive amounts of B&S and NP, I have been listening to the Secret Machine's Now Here Is Nowhere alot. Anyone else a fan. That was one of my favorite albums of 2004, but I haven't listened to it much since then. Sad and Lonely, Nowhere Again, and the Road Leads Where Its Led are so good.

Kathryn Calder is about the most beautiful woman ever.
Her band, Immaculate Machines, aren't too shabby, either.

and Phil, to say that B&S is better than TNP is essentially blasphemy. Though not having Dan would probably make a difference.

I'm not saying they're better.

I like the New Pornographers more, but I thought Belle & Sebastian were tighter. Nothing against, NP. I thought both bands outdid themselves.

I ended up missing the Animal Collective show. Chicago is a good two hours away, and I'm stuck with only one headlight, so I couldn't drive or convince anyone to go with me.

Although I'd rather see Animal Collective live than any other band at the moment, I'm still not sure how much I enjoy going to concerts. I always end up getting elbowed excessively and drinks spilled on me.

I meant to see B&S/TNP on this tour, but tickets are too expensive. As for the debate, I like them about equally. The new B&S album is much better than I was expecting.

As an aside, I've been thinking of picking up a Yo La Tengo disc. I have the 2-disc "Prisoners of Love" compilation and love it. Am I missing out on any great songs by not picking up their actual albums?

I also picked up Why?'s Rubber Traits EP. Actually, I've been a little obsessed with alot of Anticon material lately. Obviously, Elephant Eyelash, Oaklandazulasylum, and other Why? EPs have been in rotation, but I've also been listening to some cLOUDDEAD, Sole, Alias, 13 & God, Odd Nosedam, Doseone, and Jel. It's taken me awhile to get into the whole alternative hip-hop scene, but I'm really liking some of the stuff Anticon has to offer.
