So have I. After my brief attendance at the Church of Sensual Hedonism in the 80s, I became Greek Orthodox. Then, after another tour through the Church of Hedonism (I dug their worship services) I became a Full Gospel, Open Bible, Charismatic whoppin' and hollerin' Bapticostal. After I was done with showbusiness, (about 2 years), I started examining my faith, which braught me back to Rome.

Are the Full Gospel Churches into the hell and devil thing?

SOme of the most amusing sermons I have heard on hellfire and brimstone were from Roger, the pastor of the church I went to. Complete with yelling and slamming the bible on the podium and everything.

They really get into Easter.

How fancy is the Greek Orthodox service?
Its not so much fancy as it is impossible to understand, unless you speak Greek. Luckily, coming from a Catholic background, I underestood most of everything, because the liturgy is nearly identical. The only thing that drove me nuts were the cantors.

You're right. He was a former Episcopalian minister. Don't know why I thought Lutheran . . . . I just remember the girl at the pharmacy wanting to tell him about her sins, and he said I'm not a priest.

Is it really necessary for you to exhibit such negative and bitter thoughts towards these faiths? Are they really deserving of your mockery? What may have been showbusiness for you, was clearly something much more meaningful and bountiful for others.

I'm sorry you see it as negative and bitter thoughts. Just unfamiliar for me.

And though you may not like the term "showbusiness", you cannot deny that there is a certain element of showmanship that comes with certain types of worship service.

Unfamiliar? After two years?

Yes, some get carried away . . . but mostly, I see it as inspiration. Sometimes, it inspired me to stay awake and pay attention . . . . ;)

After 20 some odd years of stoic worship in Catholic and Orthodox churches, the whole gospel singing, hand clapping, jumping up and Halleluiah!ing was a bit.....unsettling. It just made me think they were trying to impress each other. I may have been wrong...it happens occationally.

I would say, that for some it's definitely putting on a show, some however are truly in the spirit . . . . :)

I have no doubt about that. I do believe that some of them really were sincerely praising God. You could see it in their face. I am just a low key, low emotional output guy, so all that passion and energy made me nervous.

You know my oldest daughter had married a Catholic, I'm sorry to say the marriage did not work . . . (not because he was Catholic, there were just other unmendable issues) Anyhow, before they were married, he went to a Gospel singing at our church. I wondered to myself, what if someone breaks out speaking in tongues? How fast will he jumpt the pews and head for the nearest exit? ;) It didn't happen, but it could have been entertaining had it. He's reserved and layed back. I think he get's it from his mother. She's a great person, but one with a dry demeanor---you don't see her get excited very often . . . .

Then, you have my husband who was raised surrounded by Pentecostals and even he is very reserved. You do nothing in public to draw attention to yourself . . . absolutely, nothing . . . punishable by death. :help:

That's more along the line of Southern Baptist . . . I haven't really come across this in Pentecostal Churches and I've been to a couple . . . .:)

I am attending a Pentecostal Church right now, and it's a lot of talk of hell, the devil, and about how one is not worshipping if a person isn't jumping over a pew...

I like hearty "amens", "That's right preach it, brother/sister", but I get more from a sermon or testimony than holy running. I don't see how such antics bring glory to God anyway...I think God gets more from people feeding and clothing the poor. I maybe wrong let me know if I am...

I am really seriously considering checking out something more rational like the UMC or something...

To which branch of Pentecostalism does your current church belong? Is is United Penecostal? Or what? There are some groups that are almost fanatical. A gentleman I had worked with had started attending a Penecostal church with a girlfriend once. They took him aside and asked him if he had ever spoken in tongues. He said no, so they took him into another room and proceeded to "teach" him how to speak in tongues. I told him to run! :)

What does UMC stand for?

It's a non denominational Trinitarian Pentecostal church. They are lovelyGod-fearing folks, but it's too much.

There are a good number of Pentecostal Churches in this area, but I have found the other ones kind of like Kenneth Copeland etc. That is certainly not for me.

United Methodists.
