What do you think this verse means?

"lest a worse thing come unto thee."

I think Jesus was saying to the man that in forgiving his sins and restoring him to health, that if the man then turned back and deliberately sinned again-thus rejecting the gift of healing, that he would be right back where he had been.

former addicts who have been clean and then returned to the habit will tell you the same thing. There is additional pain added to the pain of addiction, when realizing that they had been clean and free from their bondage, and then returned to it in a moment of weakness. So the pain and suffering of re-addiction is even greater than the original addiction.

John 5:16-18

16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

Why do you suppose those Jews didn't believe him yet others did. What was the difference? Many experienced the same miracles performed by Jesus, yet some believed and some didn't.

John 5:19 Jesus replied, "I assure you, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.

most of the unbelief stemmed from unwillingness to believe, because belief in Jesus always costs you something.

for the Pharasees and saducees, they would have had to give up their positions and standing in the community--something they had worked a long time to achieve.

many Jews faced being thrown out of the temple and Jewish society. for others it was wealth that they would have had to given up,or their place in the family, their livelihood (the tax collector),or their status with Rome (Pilot).

Why did people had to give up everything to follow Jesus and the same is not required today?
John 5:14 - Why did Jesus commanded the man to stop sinning if it would be an impossible task?

It is possible that Jesus was referring to a specific sin in the life of the recently-healed man, and one that the man would recognize. If so, there was nothing impossible in the task required.

It is also likely that Jesus does require us to give up everything to follow him. But in the context of that requirement is the hint that it might not be easy for us to understand (Mark 10: 29-31, esp. 31) -- of course, this does not give us an "out"...

It can be confusing to know what it is expected or required of a Christian. The bible says one thing and those that are intellectuals claim it means something different in the translation.
What do you personally think it actually means?

here it is....

Deu 10:12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

to fear the Lord in this case means to acknowledge and respect God for Who he is as the only all-powerful being who created the universe, formed life, and holds everything in his power.

to walk in all His ways means to learn and obey what it is that God expects of us, both in reverence to Him and with respect to our fellow men. To love Him because of what He has done on our behalf, purchasing our salvation at the cost of His son, Jesus.

and to serve Him whole heartedly with everything that is within us.

John 5:19 (NLT) Jesus replied, "I assure you, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does."
