  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Sandy Koufax was a lefty. So was Ken Stabler. I'm cool with lefties.
Ha, I'm a double leftie!

But are you cool with being labeled a "lefty"? Informal poll.

Apparently some people really are not - which I found surprising, but okay, their prerogative.

Question to my fellow liberals - are you ever offended at being called a "leftie?" I'm not, but I was wondering if any of you all were.

I'm not offended by it, but if it's said in a derogatory manner, then I can be pretty confident that the person saying it is an idiot and not interested in a substantive discussion.

I consider context and source. At CF anything left of Conan the Barbarian is "liberal". In the real world I'm a left-of-center moderate.

Well we all know what the "tard" is an abbreviation for, and really, people who use that frame of reference only reveal their extreme ignorance, and ensure I'll never pay a moment's attention to anything they say in the future.

I am a pretty straight Democrat, regulated capitalism and all that. The right-wing in America have gotten to the point where anybody that's left of "right" is potentially a communist or socialist, and they use those words interchangeably.

To give you an idea of how out of hand this nonsense has gotten, when I was covering a town government meeting in Michigan, the officials said the local community center would now be renting out space to different organizations for their events. Nothing unusual or controversial about that.

A guy walked up during public comments and called it socialism.

I'm black and it's sometimes tempting to think it's a "white person thing." Especially after the Civil Rights movement, in which many black human rights organizers were accused of being communist, including MLK. I've been accused of being an "ultra-socialist" because I went to the University of Michigan in Flint. That's it. That's why I was called a socialist.

And these people, as far as they are concerned, should absolutely be able to vote; and people on welfare should absolutely be denied the right to vote.

That's part of our heritage - back when only landowners were allowed to vote and landowning was restricted.

I do get the impression that some want it to go back to that way: that if a given demographic isn't willing to vote for Republicans (and there are many), then Republicans don't want them voting.

Some yes, but I think others, stung by the criticism, are are trying to prove the criticism unfounded - even if that means changing.

Good News on the food front - it seems that study on bacon and red meat causing cancer might have been a bit overblown:

The World Health Organization has retracted a study that revealed a connection between bowel cancer and bacon after an alert staff member discovered that the doctor presenting the results was actually two pigs dressed up in a long white lab coat.

Phew. That was a close one... No it wasn't. It wasn't even close. Bacon is amazing and delicious... that's why we call it "bacon."

Alright I want to hear some insight from my fellow Democrats on this one, since in my daily life I only ever here conservative commentary.

Most of the propaganda I see circulating on social media is that Syrian refugees are definitely going to be allowed to immigrate to the U.S. in places like Louisiana and here in California. While some governors are refusing to allow any immigrants, Jerry Brown has announced he'll work in cooperation with President Obama to create a good environment.

For one thing, I don't know for anything has been 'definitively' concluded. It seems like the government is still trying to iron out a lot of wrinkles on any potential immigration plan for refugees. For another, are we absolutely sure it's a wise idea to allow any refugees to immigrate at this exact moment in time? I'm not saying never, but it's been fewer than five days since the attacks in Paris.

This article from the Christian Science Monitor corrects a statistic given earlier this year that 15-25% of Muslims are at risk for becoming radicalized, offering a figure of less than one percent in Europe, which amounts to anywhere from 125,000-325,000.

That's a lot less than 25%, but a friend of mine did make a point that I couldn't refute (not that I was engaging him to begin with, I don't bother with Facebook debates). He pointed out that it only took 19 to pull off the September 11th attacks.

Doesn't it seem prudent to at least come up with a well-developed strategy for determining if there are any terrorists in each group that crosses the border before expressing any kind of commitment to accommodate them?

If there was a crisis that required me to take in a number of strangers into my home, I would want to be sure they weren't going to violate my family in anyway. I mean, that's the logic, right?

I'm not sure how gov't would go about background checks for refugees. Trust me, I absolutely understand the sentiment.

I'm all for effective procedures that will root out terrorists masquerading as refugees. That said: If, in the interests of our own safety, we sacrifice our compassion towards the victims of the terrorists, then the terrorists have achieved their goals.

I do find it funny that some conservatives are willing to ban all Syrian refugees from entering the country, showing zero regard even for the ones that ARE Christian. All while crying about how they are being unfairly treated here because Starbucks changed their cup design for the winter.

No kidding.

The Starbucks thing is manufactured outrage -- they can complain about it because if it were actually an affront to them, complaining about it would be the appropriate measured response. But when it's refugees the appropriate response is harder. The chosen combination of responses is a comfortable first-world bubble wherein the problems are on the scale of insufficiently festive Starbucks cups.

I just stopped and got a mocha frap , was disappointed over all the Christmas stuff they have for sale. Didn't even get a red cup, it was clear. I'm outraged!

I've said it before -- I wish I drank coffee so I could boycott them. ;)

The Starbucks thing is even shallower than that. There's some internet celebrity "pastor" on Facebook named Joshua Feuerstein who made the whole thing up. He's got a ton of followers and is basically little more than the 21st century version of a scamming televangelist manufacturing whatever clickbait and outrage he can monetize.
