• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I just ignore them the old fashioned way and read what they say and if it isnt worth commenting, I dont comment. I still want to know what people say so I can follow the stream of the thread better.

There is much to be said for shunning in some cases. There are people who are difficult in our lives all the time. Shunning, if possible, is a simple way to lower that person's impact on our life.

Ha, that's pretty good.

The term came up when I was watching people do parody highlights of this dude called DarkSydePhil, on Youtube. The guy does "Let's Plays" of video games and long story short, the guy is infamous for failing at video games and then blaming it on external factors. He didn't make a mistake. The controls lagged, the other player cheated, the game didn't tell him what to do. Etc,.

That's kind of what I've come across here on CF, and I why I don't respond as much anymore. There have been too many times, where I have argued against something a conservative said, only for it to be handwaved away and "not counting" just because they say it doesn't count. It's like when you were kids and you had that one guy throw up his "everything-proof shield."

Conservative: Where are the moderate Muslims criticizing ISIS attacks?

Me: "Right here." *Gives an entire list*

Conservative: I meant terrorist attacks in general.

Me: *No he didn't but I give another list of Muslim organizations that have done so.*

Conservative: Well if only "a handful" of Muslims is good enough for you than that's your problem.

(I've never seen a goalpost move faster)

Special pleading is also fun.

Conservative: "The state doesn't have a vested interest in letting gays get married because they can't have children."

Me: "Some straight couples can't have children." Should they be prohibited from marriage?

Conservative: No because (here it comes ladies and gentlemen) marriage is about ENCOURAGING them to procreate. Not forcing them.

Me: So it's not a requirement for marriage?

Conservative: Correct.

Me: So gay's can get married then?

Conservative: No.

Me: Why not?

Conservative: Because they can't have children.

Me: But you just said...

Conservative: Did I mention that Bush is the best thing ever and that Obama is worse than Mecha-Hitler?

Waste of time it is.

I have to agree with Nathan Poe - without a smilie, I just can't tell (especially when they are new - unless they have more than 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Reps after a month on board).

Just, people making ridiculous claims and when they are asked to provide evidence for those claims saying it is preposterous to expect them to provide evidence - and others back them up and give excuses, and blame the person asking for evidence. Sigh. It's just so silly and annoying.

I think it is meant to be annoying...goading.

Good on you, though, for not taking the bait.

Thanks. And I noted that you went and found some facts. :) I have personally gone and Googled quack 'doctors' before and posted information about them, after which there is typically a long silence, but it always come back around again because I guess people love their conspiracy theories, one of them being that mainstream science deliberately withholds a cheap, safe 'cure' for cancer. SMH.

Heck, "science" can't even cure the common goad, much less cancer.

We talk about cancer as though it is one disease, not hundreds.

That's pretty cool. I hope it pans out. As long as the immune system can successfully distinguish cancer cells from body cells and beneficial bacteria; otherwise you might get autoimmune diseases.

There are alternatives to chemotherapy, but it is still treatment. It would help if folks would back up what they say, like you wrote.
It will be interesting to see where the science takes us. Chemo today is nowhere near as bad as it used to be, but if we had something more effective, if would be great if chemo were no longer needed.

One area of medicine that needs revolutionizing is mental/emotional health. The state of the art now is pretty wretched (schizophrenia runs in my husband's family - it is not well treated yet).

I agree. The mental health field is a mess. One problem in the US is that the psychiatrists are suppose to write in regular English rather than using medical terminology. As a result, the files become huge. Then there are 2 - 4 year degree psych graduates doing intake - more paper. One doctor I know was sued because he missed a line in a huge file in a patient he hadn't seen before. He got the file 30 minutes before the appointment, and hidden in all that text was a line implying he thought about suicide. The patient later did. No intake worker picked it up as a potential suicide and the patient did not express it in the appointment when asked. So the doctor left the field and is working in another. We are losing good doctors in mental health this way.

And there is little money spent on the field.

After a long hiatus I come back to find that the forums are in basically the same state as when I left them.

Has there been anything new that I missed?

No

More hyperbole. If that were possible.

Interesting point. I've chatted with my sister about it a bit, she's starting the MA in Psychology program next fall.

What are your thoughts on the frequency a psychiatrist/therapist resorts to prescribing medication? Do you think it's overdone, underdone or maybe par for the course?

More hyperbole. If that were possible.

Love the avatar.
