In the days of Esther, when the Jews were allowed to stand for their lives, that was in an empire of huge size. What do you think was meant by the word - Jews? This would have been around 100 years or so after the Jews returned under the decree of Cyrus. History has a question as to the actual date and what king is meant in Esther. But it seems that we can't go too far out, because Esther 2:5-6 tells that Mordecai -seems had a relative - a Benjamite - "had been carried away from Jerusalem...of Babylon carried away."
The name 'Jew' is derived from Judah. This means that the majority of such are likely derived from the Kingdom of Judah.
However, there was quite a large diaspora population over northern mesopotamia, in spite of the neo-Babylonians only having tenuous control, if at all, of the area. A possible derivation from the Northern tribes is thus a possibility, if though speculation.

Do we know if the captives who were taken by the Assyrians ever returned to Israel? Did they vanish forever? Or were there scattered individuals who returned?
Judah was one of he sons of Israel. The kingdom of Judah resulted from the break-up of the United kingdom of Israel (1020 to about 930 BCE) after the northern tribes refused to accept Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, as their king.

The word Jew and even Jewish is slang that some people are offended by and others are not. They prefer the word Hebrew but Judah is more the proper term. In Revelation we read that there will be 144,000 that God has preserved pure and undefiled. 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes. (Rev7:4)

Book of Nehemiah. In the 20th year of Artaxerxes, king of Persia, (445/444 BC),Nehemiah was cup-bearer to the king. Learning that the remnant in Judah were in distress and that the walls of Jerusalem were broken down, he asked the king for permission to return and rebuild the city.

Jeremiah 3:8 "I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery."

Thanks for the variety of comments.
I have been reading the Book of Jeremiah in great detail. The historical commentaries are helpful, because the book is not "linear". Events in Jeremiah jump around in time. It appears to be several manuscripts that have been joined together, but the time sequence of events is not as simple as .. A led to B, and B led to C.

Blessings!
