Deuteronomy 12 - David Guzik Commentary on the Bible

"a. And there you shall go: Worship was not left to the opinion or whim of the individual Israelite. They had to worship God at His prescribed place, and among other worshippers of God. Worship is not a “do as you please” or a “Lone Ranger” activity."

This really resonates with me. I have stopped going to church for various reasons but, when I stand before God on Judgement Day, none of them will be good reasons. I need to start attending church, while we still have godly churches to attend in my town.
I enjoy David Guzik's commentaries more than the others that I've read, he really makes me think.

THIS is EXCELLENT. Especially where it says:

And there you shall go: Worship was not left to the opinion or whim of the individual Israelite. They had to worship God at His prescribed place, and among other worshippers of God. Worship is not a “do as you please” or a “Lone Ranger” activity."

Amen!

He DOES have good commentaries, thank you for posting it.

The Bible Says

If there arise amoung you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them: thou shalt not harken unto the words that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams:
for the Lord your God proveth you to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your hear and with all your soul.

Deuteronomy 13 verse 1

Chapter 13 told the Israelites that they must not worship other gods.

The Israelites were taken to idolatry. Idolatry is a problem is our culture as well. As I said before, as society, we are guilty of worshiping our cars, celebrities and much more more. We dedicate TV programs such as America Idol to it. We should heed such commandments by God as much as the Israelites.

Chapter 13 IS powerful. And thank you for the commentary. It clarified many of the details and how they would apply to us today.....and yes, we are prone to idolatry, just as the Israelites were.

What i found most intriguing is the false prophets and dreamers that were intending to draw the Israelites away from their God by convincing, smooth words, and even signs and wonders, and how prone the Israelites were to their deception, and that is very parallel to believers today.....so many are taken in by false teachers and dreamers of dreams and their wonders they perform. There is a sore lack of discernment in examining what the "message" is from these deceivers and if it lines up with God's Word.

Thank you for the commentary. It was edifying.

What powerful scripture; it makes me think of Matthew 5:30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. NIV

Yes it does!!!

Many of the churches in my town have been taken in by false teachings. One church has a sign the read "Jesus had two fathers and He turned out okay". What blasphemy! What heresy!
Leviticus 18:22 says "Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin." (NLT) I cannot count the ways in which this statement is wrong. And for a church to state it no less. 2Corinthians 11:13 "For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ."

that's a new level of "in God's face" especially since it's a Church sign.

It's even more urgent now for us to delve into God's Word even moreso now, for just as you said, His Word is getting twisted and the twistedness is even coming from some Churches....

it fits right into today's chapter 13.....

So true. It's a time when the righteous have to stand up and be counted. Growing up I was told "you have to stand up for what you believe in and againgst what you don't."

The Bible Says

Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

Deuteronomy 13 verse 4

This is a warning against false prophets.

Many places in the Bible it warns against false prophets but you're right.
