Deuteronomy 9 is phenomenal! In verses 4-7 God clarifies that He is driving out the children of Anak for His own sake and for the sake of the promises He made to their Israelite fathers, and for judgment against the children of Anak, and NOT for any righteousness on the part of the Israelites, for they had sorely tried God and sinned against Him and were a "stiff-necked" people.

4 Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the Lord thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the Lord hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord doth drive them out from before thee.

5 Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

6 Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

7 Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the Lord thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the Lord.

I was thinking the very same thing. I was also thinking Moses talks about one of few times he actually lost his temper.

yes, it's a wonder that Moses didn't lose it more than he did......what a tough job he had.....

Aaaah, look at this! God writes the Ten Commandments again!!!! Incredible!!!! I've missed sooooo much in not reading and avoiding these OLd Testament books for so long....

and Deuteronomy would've been the least likely that i would've read....

there is a RICHNESS and DEPTH in these books that NOBODY should miss....

God is sooooo GOOD! I am soooo thankful that He beckoned me to start reading His Word a chapter a day in this thread! It has been and is, a glorious blessing.

God bless you (((hug)))

...also, re: chapter 10, this also stands out for me.....

in verse 12, it reminds of that verse in Micah

vs 12:

12 And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

and here's the verse in Micah:

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? ~Micah 6:8

I read an article the other day on "how we will recognize the voice of God" and it touches on this briefly to remind us of 2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 d All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that e the man of God 1 may be competent, f equipped g for every good work.
I know I haven't the OT as much as I should and I'm starting to see just how much I've lost out on.
God bless hugs

Yes! The only parts of the Old Testament i read were Psalms, Proverbs, and Isaiah. Now i see how they ALL work together for all that you mentioned....

reminds me of this verse:

"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not." ~Jeremiah 33:3

and one way of "calling unto Him" is through delving into His Word......and right there in His Word He "shows us things we knew not"....

He "illumines" our understanding....it really IS as this verse says:

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." ~Psalm 119:105

I love you choice is words "illumines"; the dictionary defines it as:
"light up; brighten.
"the lamplight illumined her pale features"
enlighten (someone) spiritually or intellectually.
"he assures himself that he is illumined and not deluded""

The Bible lights our path and enlightens us.

I copied this from a commentary I read...
"1. Therefore thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge--The reason for the frequent repetition of the same or similar counsels is to be traced to the infantine character and state of the church, which required line upon line and precept upon precept. Besides, the Israelites were a headstrong and perverse people, impatient of control, prone to rebellion, and, from their long stay in Egypt, so violently addicted to idolatry, that they ran imminent risk of being seduced by the religion of the country to which they were going, which, in its characteristic features, bore a strong resemblance to that of the country they had left."
Idolatry is a problem in our culture too. The dictionary defines idolize as "admire, revere, or love greatly or excessively." By that definition, as a society, we are guilty of idolizing our cars, celebrities and much, much more. We even have TV programs dedicated to idolatry: American Idol to name just one. As a society, we've lost sight of worshipping God. This message applies as much to us today as it did to the Israelites thousands of years ago.

Chapter 11: THIS is a BEAUTIFUL memorial from God Himself, an account, a history lesson. God is a God of "memorials", isn't He?

How PRECIOUS to remember ALL He has done ALL throughout Biblical history.

Insightful as well

Deuteronomy 12 - David Guzik Commentary on the Bible

"a. And there you shall go: Worship was not left to the opinion or whim of the individual Israelite. They had to worship God at His prescribed place, and among other worshippers of God. Worship is not a “do as you please” or a “Lone Ranger” activity."

This really resonates with me. I have stopped going to church for various reasons but, when I stand before God on Judgement Day, none of them will be good reasons. I need to start attending church, while we still have godly churches to attend in my town.
I enjoy David Guzik's commentaries more than the others that I've read, he really makes me think.
