Good way to interact with family... I don't know. Pester them, scare them out of their wits, imprison some siblings, and then be really nice to everyone. Well that sounds like how I interact with my siblings, but I don't know that it's the best way to handle things.

Than again, Joseph sure gave them a lot of forgiveness! Considering what they did to him!

I love seeing God working through all of this, I bet Joseph didn't realize what kind of mark he was going to make in history! I know what you all mean about this being like a movie unfolding, but I keep thinking back to the scriptwriter!

God bless you,
Grace

LOL, grace :D that's about the same thing me and my brothers tend to do in a funny sort of way. When yesterday I read this chapter I was thinking of how my dog is when I return after a long day from home or even several days from home. When she sees smells or hears me she is going wild. I wonder how stunned and super happy-praising-singing-thanking-all you can think of Jacob must have been on the new knowledge that Josef was still alive :)

I hope you guys don't mind me joining in kinda like late,

I just recently discovered this thread :)

Yeah, I think I would be rejoicing to see my brother alive. And what a load off their consciences that must have been! Although, if I were one of Joseph's brothers, I would have been worried. "Oh, no! What if he tells my Dad? I'ma be in big trouble!"

And I'm glad to have you join, latecomers are very welcome :)

I qualifiedit by saying AFTER he when he was done toying with his brothers. Joseph forgave his brothers but not "the pretend it didn't happen forgiveness" that is really a fake forgiveness, a true forgiveness that came from his heart with an acknowledgement of what his brothers had done to him.

Joseph gave God all the glory. He said it was God's will that he should be there at that time to save his family.
He showed his family compassion and mercy by sparing their lives - He was now in a position of authority, the highest ranking person in Egypt second only to the Pharaoh, to avenge his being sold into slavery as a child.

Lol you said that real nice, AFTER he was done toying with his brothers, not that they didn't deserve it. I bet he was sort of angry with them and yet forgave them. I think its a wonder he can still see the benefits God has given him with it. So wonderful that he is still happy even though God send him far away from all of his family all this time....

Joseph showed true love to them...even though they did wrong, he made it known of their wrongs, but then forgiveness came into play and love once again...you could see God Himself through Joseph and how he handled it...

Hi Guus and Jaelyn...great to have you both here...hope you enjoy this as much as the rest of us...:)

i'm thinkin' Joseph was seeing if his brothers had changed and if they had done anything to Benjamin. His going off and crying sorta indicates how heartbroken he had been about what happened and how he still loved all of his family but he was maybe "testing" them out of necessity. His heart was right with God, i'm thinkin' he had already forgiven his brothers waaay before they were aware of it.

Lol Oh they deserved it and more.. Which is my point.. Joseph didn't string them up from the nearest tree or feed them to the lions.
What I'm saying is yes Joseph did toy with his brothers more than a bit BUT what would you have done had your siblings have sold you into slavery out of jealousy of your father's love for you and then some 10-15 years later they were at your complete and utter mercy?

Here's a commentary on today's chapter. It talks about some of the historical information such as much food Joseph sent home to his family etc. It's a good read.
Also, IMO, in the very last chapter, there's some insight into a question raised a few days ago about why, after God and Jacob had wrestled, He asked him his name. God was perhaps preparing Jacob for the changes He was about to make in him.

I just seen this, have to love my peepers, I think you're right. Joseph didn't know their character and now that I think about it, each of the things he did was a test of a sorts:
keeping the first brother, would they come back for him or let who knows what happen to him?
putting the silver back in the sacks, would they keep it?
putting the cup in Benjamin's sack, would they stand up for his brother from the same mother or let him be taken into slavery?
And he did weep when he overheard them speaking about them in their native tongue.
I think your unto something brinny.

what struck me was his crying that he hid from them.....he still loved his brothers and yeah i'm thinking he was wondering if they had changed and that's why he did what he did......

I was surprised at how many people were on the move there! You know there were daughters that aren't mentioned, and probably herdsmen and servants too. All the kids books present it as "Jacob's brothers and father" or "Jacob's family" came to live in Egypt. To me it sounds like the Israelites were already a whole tribe! This isn't what we see as "family," it's an entire clan!
