Optional commentary Deuteronomy 14 - David Guzik Commentary on the Bible
28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that years produce and store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
This is a shining example of God's compassion. His love for all people. He did not want to see the forgotten of the nation to go hungry, He provided for them, just as He provides for us as His children now. He says he will never leave us nor forsake us. Deuteronomy 31:6

This is a beautiful chapter of God's grace and His provision. The commentary is enlightening regarding slaves and how they are not how we think of slaves, but more like someone who is given a place to live and meals etc, in exchange for work, and even this has an end to it after 7 years. And even Then, the slave who is leaving is given provision and livestock, etc to begin a new life.
