Well it only gets more interesting from here...not only was Israel defeated time after time, but Eli's sons are killed and when someone runs to tell Eli what had transpired, Eli, who was sitting on a seat, fell backwards, breaking his neck...and his neck apparently broke because the sheer weight of him broke his neck. Now what is interesting is that it wasn't the news of his sons deaths that caused him to fall backwards, it was the news that the Ark of God was taken.

Tragic.

Then the wife of Eli's son Phinehas, was with child, heard the news, and died while giving birth to a son. He was named Ichabod, because the glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband. And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

Tragic.

Re: the 1st book of Samuel, chapter 1, this other wife of Hannah's husband, (Peninnah) was quite nasty, wasn't she, in that she persecuted/taunted Hannah about having no children while she herself had children (she rubbed it in Hannah's face, even as Hannah was so heartbroken about being child-less). Interestingly enough, Penninah is referred to in verses 6 as Hannah's "adversary" and a description of her loathesome behavior and heart continues in verse 6:

verses 6 and 7: And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut up her womb. And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

This reminds me of other wives in the Old Testament who were childless for a season and taunted about it.

And here, in verse 13 we gots good ol' Eli, totally mis-understanding Hannah's grief, and thinkin' she's "drunk"(?) If only he would'a been payin' half as much attention to his two sons who probably WERE "drunk" amongst other things...but no, he actually thinks this broken-hearted woman is "drunk"(?):

verse 13: Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

And God hears Hannah, and she bears a son and as she vowed unto God, brought her son, after he was weaned, to Eli, for service unto the Lord.

RE: 1 Samuel 2: Here we have Hannah rejoicing that God HEARD her and ANSWERED and that H shut up the mouth of those taunting her and He Himself was the Lifter of her head:

verse 5: They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.

It also reminds me of this verse in Isaiah:

"Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD. Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited." ~Isaiah 54:1-3

Here, in verse 12 we see the problem with, not only Eli's two sons, but with Eli, their father:

verse 12: Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord.

If Eli KNEW this (and surely he did) why would he even allow them to #1 BE priests, and #2 CONTINUE in their abominations, etc. This speaks of Eli and his own righteousness before God, even more than it speaks of his sons, and that is because he "allowed" it right from the gitgo.

Verse 17: Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord: for men abhorred the offering of the Lord.

Eli's sin was even greater than theirs. He sat by, allowing it.

See verses 22-36, especially verse 29 that states plainly what was in Eli's heart:

Verse 29: Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

verses 22-36:

22 Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

23 And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.

24 Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the Lord's people to transgress.

25 If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the Lord, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the Lord would slay them.

26 And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the Lord, and also with men.

27 And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house?

28 And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?

35 And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.

36 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.

Eli was a priest. It is odd that his two sons were evil. It seems that the two sons of Eli did not believe in God.

Re: 1 Samuel 3: here we have God directly speaking to Samuel in verses 11-14. It seems God had given Eli a grace period to heed what God told him about his sons and about himself, and what God was going to do, yet Eli heeded God not. (And here is the heart of the matter: Eli feared his sons and not God. He held his sons above God, even after God told Eli what He was going to do)

verses 11-14:

11 And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.

12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

And even here in verse 18, after Samuel told Eli what God had said, Eli did not repent or go to God pleading for himself or his sons (tragic, and perhaps the most "telling" of all, regarding the "condition of Eli's heart and why his sons were as they were)

verse 18:

18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth him good.

Tragic.

Eli would be a good study of himself. This verse sorta sums up Eli's heart towards God (Eli's sons were only a "symptom" of the problem that was at the root of Eli's heart towards God):

Verse 29: Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

I Samuel 4 verse 18

Brinny Eli was the judge of Israel, but he could not keep his own two sons in order.

You are right. This verse sums up the whole problem.

This explains why Eli could not control his two sons.

The Sons of Eli

The sons of Eli, Hophni and Pinehas, meanwhile, were behaving wickedly, for example by taking for themselves all the prime cuts of meat from sacrifices, and by committing adultery with the women who served at the sanctuary entrance.

Eli is aware of their behavior but he rebukes them too lightly and is unable to stop them. The sons continue in their sinful behavior, and so, according to the text, a man of God prophesies to Eli that Eli and his family will be punished for this, with all male descendants dying before reaching old age and being usually placed in positions subservient to prophess from other lineages.

The curse alludes to a previous (not appearing elsewhere in the Bible) promise from Yahweh of Eli's lineage continuing eternally. While this continuation is not revoked, a curse is placed on all of Eli's male descendants forever. As a sign of the accuracy of this future, Eli is told by the man of Yahweh that his sons will die on the same day.

Re: 1 Samuel 5: So the Philistines have the ark of God and they put it into the temple of Dagon, right beside the God they worshiped (Dagon the fish-god).

And lo and behold, the next morning they go in there and their god Dagon had fallen on his face before the ark of God. (sometimes i wonder if God has a sense of humor) ^_^

Sooooo they set him back up, and the NEXT morning they go in there, and it must'a reeeeeeally shook 'em cuz Dagon not only was, again, fallen on his face before the ark of God, his palms were cut off and so was his head! And he was only a stump. THEN it says in verse 5:

verse 5: Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

This means that they were so shook up that the priests nor ANYONE ever set foot into Dagon's temple again, right?

And God plagued them with emerods (Tumors; hemorrhoids) in verse 6:

verse 6: But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.

Soooooo they get even more scared and desperately try to take the ark of God elsewhere (i wonder how they even got it if no one ever set foot into Dagon's temple again?)

So there they are, carrying the ark of God, and they take it to Gath. And here's what happened in verse 9:

verse 9: And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.

And in verses 10-12 the chapter ends with a severe reminder of WHO is God, and that HE is El Elyon, the living God and there is NONE like Him, and a reminder of WHOSE ark it is.

10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.

11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
