Chapter 3

The commentary for chapter 3 was helpful and pointed out the amazing parallel to Moses and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea and to Joshua and the Israelites crossing the Jordan River, with the priests, and the Levites carrying the ark of God on "DRY" ground, leading the way.

This is a PRECIOUS chapter...what i couldn't help but think, is that by the ark of God going before the Israelites, and the obedience of the Israelites, in following after, that with every step they took in faith in their mighty God, they were stepping into blessing after blessing.

Again, just as when God parted the Red Sea, what a sight that must've been when He parted the Jordan and they crossed over, walking on dry ground.

And again, we see a man of God, a leader of the Israelites, just like Moses was, as Joshua, the newly appointed leader takes charge, on behalf of his God.

There is a definite link here. God parted the waves so that the Children of Israel could cross the Red Sea as they left Egypt.

God parted the waves again when the Israelites crossed the Jordan so that they could enter the promised land.

Both times the children of Israel crossed on dry land.

There is great symbolism here.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

The Israelites came to Jordan in faith, having been told that they should pass it. In the way of duty, let us proceed as far as we can, and depend on the Lord. Joshua led them.

The people were to follow the ark. Thus must we walk after the rule of the word, and the direction of the Spirit, in everything; so shall peace be upon us as upon the Israel of God; but we must follow our ministers only as they follow Christ.

All their way through the wilderness was an untrodden path, but most so this through Jordan. While we are here, we must expect and prepare to pass ways that we have not passed before; but in the path of duty we may proceed with boldness and cheerfulness.

Whether we are called to suffer poverty, pain, labour, persecution, reproach, or death, we are following the Author and Finisher of our faith; nor can we set our feet in any dangerous or difficult spot, through our whole journey, but faith will there see the prints of the Redeemer's feet, who trod that very path to glory above, and bids us follow him, that where he is, we may be also.

They were to sanctify themselves. Would we experience the effects of God's love and power, we must put away sin, and be careful not to grieve the Holy Spirit of God.

After sanctifying themselves the next day, the Children of Israel would experience a mighty miracle of God.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary continued

The waters of Jordan shall be cut off. This must be done in such a way as never was done, but in the dividing of the Red sea. That miracle is here repeated; God has the same power to finish the salvation of his people, as to begin it; the WORD of the Lord was as truly with Joshua as with Moses. God's appearances for his people ought to encourage faith and hope. God's work is perfect, he will keep his people. Jordan's flood cannot keep out Israel, Canaan's force cannot turn them out again.

A mighty miracle took place through our faithful brother Joshua. He like our brother Saints in the New Testament, heard the voice of our Father. He obeyed His voice and he witnessed the parting of the River Jordan in the same way Moses parted the Red Sea. The Children of Israel walked through the River Jordan as the Waves parted either side of them like two walls.

Joshua 4 verse 1

This whole chapter is about taking 12 stones from the centre of the river Jordan. God wanted evidence that the miracle had taken place. This was a true story. It was not a dream. Taking 12 stones from the riverbed was proof if anyone wanted it that this miracle of crossing the Jordan really happened.

Why would our Heavenly Father want twelve big Stones from the centre of the River Jordan?

And he spoke to the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until you were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over: That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that you might fear the LORD your God for ever. ​

Yes, it is HUGELY significant, in a for-ever, eternal kind of way....and kinda' points to the coming Messiah, in that He will make a Way before ALL the people of the earth to God, cuz He is the Way, the Truth and the Life Himself and HE is the ultimate WAY...it's almost like God was pointing to a Way greater even than the way He made for the Israelites these two times....

I'm sooooo thankful for this Bible study. I would've never ever delved into these Old Testament books otherwise...there are inexplicable TREASURES in ALL of them....

Chapter 4:

this verse stood out for me too....

verse 24: That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever.

God seems to be saying that these stones are a "testament" to Him and thus to be remembered and testified to, generation after generation, after generation, and this testimony of the stones would be a testament, testifying to the entire world of God's power and prompting the "fear of the Lord" to the Israelites.....a very precious thing in the sight of God....each man of God throughout Biblical history "feared the Lord"....this pivotal verse is the equivalent of "knowing God 101":

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." ~Proverbs 9:10

We learn from the Battle of Jericho that the Children of Israel were invincible when God was leading them into battle.

God was helping the Children of Israel in the Battle of Jericho but they still had to follow Gods instructions carefully.

Rahab the harlot was saved because she let the spies down from her window on a red rope.

The Children of Israel had to follow the strict instructions from God to win the Battle of Jericho.
