  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Could you imagine how the Israelites felt hearing these words from a man, a prophet, they revered as much as Moses? I would think they felt many emotions, not the least of which being sadness at knowing Moses was going to die but joy at knowing they would see him again in heaven. Also shame in the truth of his words, of their turning their backs on God and to foolish gods.

Soooo sad, in sooo many ways.....it made me wonder also if God cries....

So here, in chapter 34, God shows Moses all the land that he had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Interestingly, although Moses died, he was not feeble, but just as strong as ever, according to verse 7:

"And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated."

And God Himself buried him, in a place that only God knows the exact location of:

verses 5-6:

5 So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord.

6 And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

Moses KNEW he was saying goodbye to the Israelites before he went up to meet with God and would not see them again.

This is a phenomenal last chapter and chapter(s) of Moses' life. He in essence, makes his exit with a song and a blessing to the Israelites, and God Himself buries him. Moses didn't really die of old age, he just died sorta the way that Elijah did...it was just time for him to make his exit.

Joshua I: it's precious how many times God actually encourages Joshua to be strong and of good courage, and reminds him of His promises to never leave him nor forsake him, at this pivotal time when Moses has died, leaving a HUGE gap in leadership, and now God telling Joshua he is now their leader and he will lead the Israelites into the promised land, and that He will ALWAYS be with him, wherever he goes.

And they went and came into an harlot's house, names Rahab, and lodged there.

Joshua 2 verse 1

Joshua sent two spies secretly to Jercho to spy out the land, to prepare for the attack by the Israelies.

Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall.

Joshua 2 verse 15

The King of Jericho rumbled the spies and set after them. Rahab the harlot at much danger to herself, used a red rope to let the Israeli spies down the city walls. The Israeli spies escaped via the window of Rahab's house which was on the city wall.

Chapter 3

The commentary for chapter 3 was helpful and pointed out the amazing parallel to Moses and the Israelites crossing the Red Sea and to Joshua and the Israelites crossing the Jordan River, with the priests, and the Levites carrying the ark of God on "DRY" ground, leading the way.

This is a PRECIOUS chapter...what i couldn't help but think, is that by the ark of God going before the Israelites, and the obedience of the Israelites, in following after, that with every step they took in faith in their mighty God, they were stepping into blessing after blessing.

Again, just as when God parted the Red Sea, what a sight that must've been when He parted the Jordan and they crossed over, walking on dry ground.

And again, we see a man of God, a leader of the Israelites, just like Moses was, as Joshua, the newly appointed leader takes charge, on behalf of his God.

Joshua 3 verse 17

The Israelites cross over Jordan and approach to attack Jericho from the east.

And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

Joshua 3 verse 5

And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee

Joshua 3 verse 7

God gives these wonderful words of support to Joshua, as the Israelites cross over Jordan in preparation for the coming attack on Jericho.
