  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Something like 99% of species that have ever existed are extinct. It's not entirely surprising that the other human species - of which there were never many - have gone. It's not exactly unusual; come to think of it, it's true of rather a lot of animals.

That's a difficult number to conclude given that we only know about 25% of our current number of species. Your pretty playing world expert about what nobody knows.

Over 98% of "documented" species are now extinct.

Which doesn't even take into consideration all the species that died out before we ever got a chance to discover them.

Where did that 25% statistic come from, and why couldn't the same logic apply?

Have you ever stopped to think about what you write? How do you think people estimate we only know 25% currently? Yeah, those same people, using the same tests, concluded that what lives today (including the 75% that we don't know) is about 1% of what ever lived.

As near as I can tell Rick, that imaginary number was printed one time and has been repeated as science folklore, not only in by my preferred source, Golden Books publishing,

%24(KGrHqEOKiME3!VnwShvBNyV6yyNR!~~_35.JPG

but thousands of places.
I have to admit that Golden books is the most authoritative source I could find for this quote.
Peer review is different for different people.

The people at Golden Books CabVet? What else do they write about?

Home for a Bunny
Generations of children have followed this furry, lovable bunny on his springtime journey to find a home. A family favorite since 1956, Margaret Wise Brown's simple yet playful tale is perfectly complemented by Garth Williams's exquisite artwork--and is now back in print as a Little Golden Book Classic.

How Do Penguins Play?
This playful rhyming Little Golden Book asks, "How do penguins play?" Children will delight in watching bear cubs, seals, penguins, monkeys, and other animal friends frolicking joyfully with each other. Adorable pastel illustrations show these animals playing king-of-the-hill, keep away, and other fun and familiar games.

How to Babysit a Grandpa
This is a hilarious and accessible picture book about a child spending time with his grandpa. Written in a how-to style, the narrator gives important tips for "babysitting" a grandpa, including what to eat for snack (anything dipped in ketchup, ice cream topped with cookies, cookies topped with ice cream) what to do on a walk (find lizards and dandelion puffs, be on the lookout for puddles and sprinklers), and how to play with a grandpa (build a pirate cave, put on a scary play). Filled with humor, energy, and warmth, this is a great gift for or from a grandparent, and perfect for lap reading when Grandpa comes to visit!

That's how evolution works, right?
Clear out all the loosers to make way for the handful of winners who fit better!

Down with LOOSERS! They suck! Horay for those who are a better fit!

Erm - from your source:

This approach was validated against well-known taxa, and when applied to all domains of life, it predicts ~8.7 million (±1.3 million SE) eukaryotic species globally, of which ~2.2 million (±0.18 million SE) are marine. In spite of 250 years of taxonomic classification and over 1.2 million species already catalogued in a central database

Total of 8.7 million species with 1.2 million described gives 14% discovered, not 25%.
