When under King Solomon the first Temple was completed,
... Solomon summoned to Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark of the Lord 's covenant from Zion, the City of David (2 Chronicles 5:2)
This ark had once been kept in The Most Holy Place of the Tent of Meeting. Concerning the articles inside the ark:
There was nothing in the ark except
the two tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a
covenant with the Israelites after they
came out of Egypt. (2 Chronicles 5:10)
Some time in the past, certain articles
were removed from the Ark, for as
Hebrews 9:4 explains...
This ark contained the gold jar of manna,
Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets [The Ten Commandments] of the covenant.
Setting side the question of what happened to the gold jar and Aaron's staff, there could have been a divine purpose for why these articles were not within the Ark at the time of Solomon's dedication of the Temple. These reasons might have been...
(1) As the first Temple at its initiation was to be a type of the Heavenly Temple,^ the earthly one had to correctly reflect that the Messiah was not of the discredited Aaronic priesthood or of the Levitical priesthood, but rather "after the Order of Melchezidek".^^ That is, of the Zadokite type. Hence the absence of anything referring to Aaron.
(2) Physical manna and the receptacle of the miraculous bread had to be removed so that Jesus' claim to be the "Bread of Life" would only have one reference point: Himself.
My thoughts about the above are speculative. Perhaps there are other
reasons, such as that God might have wanted the focus to remain on the one article left, the stone tablets--for all their spiritual/covenantal meaning.
Any other thoughts about this?
