The apostles of Christ knew Him first hand for three years night and day. They had a revelation of God comparing to the Old Testament prophets. They were trained, enriched in love and given power from on high. Then Saul was given a revelation and call. It is written that there was also Andronicus and Junias, maybe Barnabas was an apostle too. They did the work of making converts of Hebrews and gentiles and forming churches such as the seven churches. This really should not have stopped, true?
A church without apostles and evangelists subsists, does not grow and reproduce. Others agree?
What the early church seemed to have was succession and repetition. The great revelation of God Peter and John had and even Paul, it was comparable to Moses' revelation, but this battery of power in them the successors lacked. Young Christians of the first and second centuries to have this revelation and power would be helped up into God by the apostles and evangelists... Timothy, Apollos... but then to be strong would need seek God's face and receive His Spirit and love. Like Moses go up the mountain, meet God, and come down with something to give the fellows and outsiders.
I open discussion of how many apostles there were, how is the church to grow and multiply and are there apostles today, are there prophets today and on the matter of seeking God's face, love and being disciples of the Holy Spirit now sent in in Jesus place and the revival of experiencing God's face and love...
