• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Of course, but we are discussing human culture and evolution of memes etc. When you are talking about an all-knowing God who sees all time independently...then surely the morals will remain the same? Surely God doesn't let people 1000 years ago get away with sin that he would condemn the modern man to hell for? Does that make sense to you?

The problem with people is that no matter how many rules you make, we're never going to follow them all perfectly. We're all guilty of one thing or another.

The more laws you make, the more complicated things get. But if you list them as "love God, and love your neighbor" the task seems much more simple.

The reason why God gave the laws that He did was to give the Jews an outline of how to behave in a way that would be good enough for Him to tolerate being around them. He didn't ask for perfection, just obedience.

Also, in some cases God allows some sins because He knows we're flawed. In Matthew 19, the Pharisees tested Jesus by asking Him if divorce was lawful. They quoted the Deuteronomy, saying that Moses gave the Jewish males permission to divorce their wives.

Matthew 19:8-9 - Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

God's standard is perfection. Divorce is contrary to God's ideal picture of marriage, which is union for a lifetime, a symbol of God's relationship with His people. But because we're sinful creatures, divorce is one of the many signs of the corruption that exists in our world. The Bible is clear that God hates divorce.

I'm sure divorce isn't the only thing God tolerated from His people.

Which is precisely why many atheists implore believers to put down their ancient books. Humanity and civilistation can't stay in the dark ages.
Why not? When I look at the moral standards held in the "dark ages" by, for instance, St. Francis of Assisi, I find them vastly superior to the morals advanced in the modern age by, for instance, Richard Dawkins.

Dear Curious Atheist. Jesus gave us the 2 commandments: " love God with all your hearts, with all your souls, and with all your minds, love your neighbour as yourself." You asked which is not a sin? All we say, or do, or advocate, which is not from selfless love, is Sin. Is hurting anybody from Love? or saying hurtful things? or lying, or even worse, everything is Sin, which is not done in love or charity, or kindness, or from a loving and forgiving heart. I say this with love. Greetings from Emmy, sister in Christ.

Hey guys, I think this is a good thread as forget about all the other commandments, but do we keep the very first commandment of God

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor see them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God...”
[The Bible, Exodus 20:3-5]
“Thou shalt have none other gods before me.Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is inheaven above, or that in the earth beneath, or that is in the water beneath the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God...”
[The Bible, Deut 5:7-9]

no i don't think we even scratch our brains for it

The following verse from Deuteronomy contains an exhortation from Moses

“Shama Israelu Adonai Ila Hayno Adna Ikhad”
It is a Hebrew quotation which means
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord”
[The Bible, Deut 6:4]

The Bible does not support the Christian belief in trinity at all. One of the scribes once asked Jesus as to which was the first commandment of all, to which Jesus merely repeated what Moses had said, namely:
“Shama Israelu Adonai Ila Hayno Adna Ikhat”.
This is a Hebrew quotation, which means:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.”
(Mark 12:29)

So can someone explain me how can there be contradiction in the book to God.

Curious Atheist-

Here is the list of the 613 laws and commandments which are to be found in Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament), as well as the verses that were used as the basis for each law and commandment:

www.answers.com/topic/613-mitzvot-1

We Christians call this The Old Covenant, replaced by The New Covenant upon Christ's death and resurrection (Hebrews 8:1 to 10:14). The old covenant was not a buffet of laws and commandments, where the individual could pick-and-choose which he wanted and which he would 'leave on the shelf'. It was a set of laws and commandments, and was seen as that by those who accepted them. They were all to be followed if possible, although some were intended for a specific class within Jewish society.

Likewise, the new covenant is another set of commandments which we are to see as a set. They tell us that not only are we not to hate others, but we are also not to judge others. They tell us that not only are we to have self-control, but we are also to alleviate the suffering we see around us. In other words, just as the set of laws and commandments contained in the old covenant come from all over the five books of Torah, the laws and commandments of the new covenant come from all over The New Testament.

The majority of these laws and commandments can be found in The Gospel of St. Matthew, called by some the Jewish gospel due to its emphasis on laws. Another passage is Galatians 5:16-26, called by me 'the Christians' code of conduct', due to its emphasis on what emotions, as well as actions, truly define the Christian.

No Christian believes in three gods. This is a myth produced by your Oneness pulpits to cause division in the church, to discredit other denominations in hopes of keeping you away from them.

I've been a part of many different denominations for years, including Lutheran and Baptist, both of which are Trinitarian, and none of them believe that there are three gods. Our belief is essentially the same: that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one God. I've even been confirmed into a Lutheran church, and this is exactly what they taught me.

The only groups I can think of that would believe that God is three separate gods would be Mormons, and maybe Jehovah's Witnesses. But these are neither Trinitarian or Christian groups.

Dear Curious Atheist. You asked " How can we love God ?" with all our hearts, souls, and minds? By following His Commandment: " love your neighbour as yourself." There are many kind people, who love and care for others, but what is the difference? To love and care for our fellow-beings is very good, and God will know and approve. and we all know that those kind people are well-liked and well-thought about. The difference is: they are already getting their thanks and appreciation, while still living on Earth. To love others, as we love ourselves, and doing it for the love of God, not wanting anything, neither praise or money, is doing it freely and selflessly. " Not letting our right hand know, what our left hand is doing" God knows our hearts, and God knows our sincere efforts, and God will bless us. I say this with love, Curious Atheist. Greetings from Emmy, sister in Christ.

What entitles Jesus as God, When he himself says I Son of Man not less than 8o times in the 4 gospels, and please do not criticise any sects of Christianity, because Jesus and his disciples were neither Lutheran and Baptist nor from Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses. Let's have a healthy discussion holding bible as the authority, which ever bible you quote from I am ok with it.
