  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Taylor committed the one crime that must be punished by the Conservisphere - she encouraged young people to register and vote.
True. Young people need to vote for their rights. Since their rights and freedoms are being taken away. By old people that benefitted by freedoms, that they are trying to take away.

All music appeals to emotions - the alternative would be appealing to reason, and I just can't see how that would work. An appreciation for the beauty of music is still an emotional response, and beautiful music comes in all forms and styles.

I was addressing the emotions of children. The arrangement of various sounds and tones that complement each other that makes music sound beautiful. Now you can argue is beauty an emotion. May be so, but it not like what a child/youth all keyed up experiences full of growth hormones.

The Rise of ‘Me Music’

He's got a point there.

But this is paralleled elsewhere. Trump is the rise of 'me politics' on the right. Much of his populist appeal is how he validates the forgotten middle-American vs the the coastal elites who shape so much of culture. It really is about "see ME!" to a large extent.

Not to make every single thing about Trump. Its just one really obvious example of much personal neediness drives events and culture in the US.

"Those dang kids and their _______ music!" has been a rallying cry for every generation. The truth is that every generation has a lot of garbage music - we just forget it over time, and only remember the winners.
They keep walking on my lawn too!

I hear a lot of interviews with contemporary lower tier pop figures and there's just a ton of "well I was in this relationship and it blew up and I had to find myself..."

Nothing wrong with that. But self-assertion is almost the everytheme in pop and aspiring pop.

That's what I thought. Some musicians spent their entire careers making personal songs. Where better to find inspiration than to look inward and write about a failed romance or a personal experience?

When I was a child they said the music of the 60's and 70's showed a society in decline.
Well there were a ton of anti war songs!

Not to mention songs like 'He Was My Brother' by Simon and Garfunkel. I'm sure many saw trying to register black voters as a sign of societal decline and the murder of those who did so as protecting society.
