  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is this for people who have a poor eating diet.

Natural sources of this important amino acid are available, here are a few of the top taurine sources:

Meat and poultry — 11 to 306 milligram/100 grams wet weight
Seafood — 11 to 827 milligrams/100 grams wet weight
Dairy products — two to eight milligrams/100 milliliters

Yes, people eating animal-based diets will have much more taurine from their diet than for example vegans. But its still not close to 3g, so its a question whether constant regular lower doses from animal products have the same effect as the therapeutic dosage to people who already lost most of it.

Because taurine is natural for our bodies, supplementing it does not seem harmful in any case.

Is that the momentary boost found in RedB*ll and cat treats?
Its being added to energy drinks, but I would not recommend to drink it that way. I think the "momentary boost" in energy drinks is caused by a huge amount of sugar and caffeine, mainly.

Some regular form of fasting and intervals of moderate and intense exercise already does all the claimed health benefits of taurine therapy including all factors that are related to aging like augmenting telomerase activity for example.

Exercise brings additional benefits not possible with taurine therapy alone like stimulating increase in bone density and muscle mass. Taurine therapy alone won't increase muscle mass unless combined with exercise.

Test subjects in taurine studies are also made to perform exercise sessions to test the effect of taurine on exercise performance and makes you wonder how much of the claimed benefits of taurine is coming from exercise in those studies.

This is one example of such study concerning taurine therapy and exercise sessions is part of the study to observe effects of taurine on exercise performance, exercise recovery, and metabolic changes during and after exercise.

Taurine isn't an essential amino acid, as it is produced in the human body, though there is debate as to how much taurine is optimum. It is a semi-essential amino acid at best in humans. Animals like cats don't produce taurine in their bodies, which means they must obtain taurine from food.

Most of the effects of energy drinks containing taurine are due to the caffeine. Caffeine is a proven ergogenic (performance-enhancing) supplement.

Creatine has a bigger evidence base in terms of being an ergogenic supplement. It's also relatively cheap.
