Taliban gains Afghan territory, may seek 'complete return to power' amid US withdrawal

Since the U.S. announced its withdrawal nine weeks ago, a senior Afghan official tells "PBS NewsHour" the Taliban have seized 40 districts all over the country. In total, the Taliban control more than 120 districts, and are fighting over an additional 180 districts.

And, this weekend, Taliban fighters moved to the edge of provincial capitals Maimana and Faryab in Kunduz City. The Taliban haven't breached Kunduz City's outer security ring, but their presence breached residents' sense of security.

And the solution is what exactly?

Go back in time and have the US exert more carrot/stick to get the Taliban to engage in meaningful peace talks with the Afghan government.
When it was clear we were itching to exit, the Taliban bided their time and pretended to talk. Their time of waiting is over.

If we’re going back in time let’s go a bit further and not back/arm them in their fight against the USSR.

Gonna suck for the USA a few years from now.

Why? It will be like Vietnam, the US will cut their losses and move on.

I just hope the US learn some lessons. Just because you have a navy and air force that can blow away anything in the sea or the air doesn't mean you can run a counter-insurgency in a part of the world where you are already really unpopular.

The solution right now is to offer everyone who wants to leave afghanistan for greener, freer pastures asylum in a western country of their choice. Especially those people who cooperated with the occupying forces.

Maybe evacuate all women. That would solve the afghanistan problem in a few decades.

We never learn. We did for a time after Viet Nam. It seems every generation has to re-learn the limits of military power.

It doesn't help the US education system is filled with propaganda masquerading as history and scholarship, and most Americans seem to believe that their values are just the default, and anyone who challenges them are automatically oppressors or enemies of humanity.

Viet Nam is now a good trading partner with the US.

A new U.S. intelligence assessment says that the Afghan government could fall within six months of the American military departing, according to U.S. officials familiar with the information.

The assessment, distributed among U.S. officials within the past week, highlights an increasingly stark picture as the U.S. military sends home troops and equipment: The Taliban continues to take control of districts across the country, and Afghan military units are either laying down their arms or are being routed in bloody clashes.
