  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Take your pick: super powers

After butting heads with a few others in a recent topic, I thought it prudent to start a much more light-hearted thread as a token of good faith. It'll be a nice change, I think. :)

Suppose you were given the opportunity to possess a single "super power." What would you choose? The options are nearly limitless, ranging from the ability to fly, X-Ray vision, telekenesis, teleportation, incredibles strength, invisibility, telepathy, and much, much more. Yet like being a kid in a candy store, we can't have them all: if you could pick only one, what would it be?

I guess I'll be the first to start it off. I would say "The Force" from Star Wars, but that's really numerous super powers crammed into one title: telekenesis, precognisance, telepathy, etc., so that's kind of off-limits. Given this, I would choose "Energy Projection," that is, the ability to project energy in any fashion I desired: creating energy fields around objects to lift them up and move them about without physically touching them, being able to send shock waves & beams of intense energy toward the bad guys, etc.

Ok, you pose an interesting question, but one that I've been asked before. In English class my freshman year of high school, the teacher always had us do creative writing. And once he had us write about what super power we would have if we could choose only one.
Here's what I wrote:

If I were to have one super power it would be the ability to fly. Who do I pick that you ask? Some may think that it's so I could go where ever I want, or so I don't have to walk everywhere. But that's not the reason why. I want to fly so I can escape. Escape from what? Everything. The problems, the pain, the people, myself... I would fly to a place where there would be no problems or pain. The people would be caring and compassionate. All I want to do is fly off to that perfect place and escape from the daily battle. Escape from the daily struggles and worries. Just to soar off into the carefreeness of it all. One day. Someday. I will get my wish to fly. But when that day comes I won't need to escape, for that escape will have come to me. When I am able to fly I will have no need to. I will already be in that perfect place. I will alraedy be free...

My husband asked me this question. I told him I wanted to be invisible, and he said "Pick something you don't already have."
It's true. I know how to make people ignore me. I once disappeared in front of an entire classroom while giving a presentation...the teacher interrupted, went off on a tangent, and an hour later realized I was still standing there.
So other than invisibility, I wish I could read people's minds, as long as I could turn it off when I needed to and they could block me out when they wanted to...and maybe be able to let them know what I am thinking also.

Hm, I was posed a variant on this question earlier this year: would you rather be able to turn invisible or able to fly?

My initial response was to turn invisible -- which, I guess, is a reflection of my personality. But now I think I'd rather fly... invisibility is awfully passive, and I'd rather be able to do things with my power. (That's assuming here that "invisible" also means noncorporeal. Boy, this is complicated.)

(P.S. energy projection is a combo power too, but that's okay. Cos if you can lift objects, then you could also levitate yourself. So you get flight and super-attack-strength)

I had partly counted on this and you're quite right, but I'm not so sure that, in the technical sense, it would be a "combo power;" it would be a "combo use of a single power" since in every case, I'm doing the same thing: manipulating energy. Heh, I beat the system so that I can have my cake and eat it too. ;)

If you could see the future, and then you changed your decision, you really wouldn't be seeing the future would you? :p

Hmmm.... very cool question.

I would have to say either telekenesis or being empathic.
Being able to move objects around without touching them would be cool, but I bet eventually it would result in my becoming too lazy to physically do ANYTHING.
Being an empath would also be kind of different. You could sense people's emotions and feelings and know how to act. I guess that also might take some of the fun out of having a conversation, though.

Either that, or the power to instantly finish my homework without anyone realising that I didn't spend hours on it.

I have always kind of wanted the power to wish things clean without actually doing the cleaning.

But more seriously i would want to be telekinetic. It seems really useful- like a 3rd hand. I also imgine the sci-fi solution to this. The invention of some sort of energy beam that can move things with out physically controlling it, then a helmit that can detect brain activity that the wearer could learn to control to control the energy beam ;) (/nerd)
