I gotta admit I do swear more than I should. My friends growing up around me swore so much the habit stuck to me. Though Im not really bad with it, I still slip sometimes.

I definitely think you should work with him on it and help him out and be patient. Its not an easy habit to just drop in a day especially knowing how it is on a construction which I was doing for a few years. Though if he is really wanting to do it im sure overtime he will be able too.

And speaking of which this thread has me thinking on my swearing again since I have grown kind of complacement in working on it. I thank you for that, lol.

It really is subjective, but we are instructed to "not have foul mouths", does this constitute cuss words, or just talking nasty/dirty?

I'm not sure. I just never felt correction from God when swearing, while I do know other things I do have bothered him and have felt it. It could mean insults, it could mean talking foul about others, I'm not sure on that scriptures precise meaning. All I know is society invents words, and then people decide whether they are foul or not, not God. One group may think the word "suck" is foul, like I suck at this, while others do not.

1. I do not swear.
2. I don't mind OCCASIONAL swearing in casual company, UNLESS there are children around. I don't like it, but I won't make a big deal out of a word here and there. I will not put up with the "f" word or the "c" word, EVER.
3. I would not date or marry someone who had a habit of swearing.

So do you swear? What if someone you are dating asked you to stop? Would you do it?

I know that this may not be a big deal to some but it really is a deal breaker for me. I can understand a slip now and again but I don't like it as part of someone's daily language.

Oh boy...I wonder what the other deal breakers are...

I very rarely swear and would prefer to be with a guy who also rarely (or never) swears. I cringe just hearing swearing in lyrics. It's usually unnecessary but I totally understand swearing if you slam a finger in a car door or something.

I have a bad habit in that I do swear occasionally. :( My mother hates it when I talk to her. I really do try to clean up my language, sometimes something just slips out... So long as a guy didn't swear alot. If every other word was practically a swear word, I don't think it would work out. ... btw ....anyone looking for a swearing accountability partner??? I need one...

Years ago I cussed sometimes no more then your average person but I realized I was cussing more to sound cooler and it was not good in God's eyes also so I just stopped cussing untill today where I never cuss anymore. Unless i'm extremly ticked off or like, im drunk or something.

I didn't swear for the longest time. I remember the first time I did. I got angry and frustrated about something and I thought no one could hear me at the time. Turns out my parents could.

I still have that habit when I am really frustrated with something. Swearing was never a big issue for me until I spent 4 years in the military. I was in for about a year the first time I swore and I knew it was the first time because the whole unit stopped what they were doing and the Sargent looked over and said "Was that Vander Deen? I've never heard him swear before!" Well actually that's a cleaned up version of what he said. But being around people that swears every other word does get to you. You do pick up other people's bad habits.

These days I am very conscious of my language and try to keep it clean. When I feel the urge to swear because of frustration I usually try to resist it and do something else or calm down before going on with what I am doing. Sometimes that doesn't work. I know I can be too competitive at times and get really worked up over it and that is something that I am really trying to work on. Swearing is not a part of my daily language although that might be debatable as growing up on a farm there are some words in my vocab that we wouldn't consider swearing but others would.

I would make a big effort to stop using words that I knew offended some one I was dating.

Haha, I know what you mean man. Gosh, in boot camp, every other word was the F word lol. I did go to an all male boot camp though so that might have something to do with it. I spent about 4 years in the active duty military and 2 years in the Reserves and I only met ONE person who didn't swear regularly. He was my Sergeant hehe. He would call you out too for swearing and make you do pushups... it was kinda funny :p

Also, I NEVER cuss around my parents. Noooooo way. I can control my language though... like I said, I only swear if I'm in a heightened emotional state of some sort.

I'd give the guy a chance. It doesn't take long to clean up your mouth.

I have a potty mouth, and I've had times where I had to clean it up right quick.

-1st time in Bible College
-Moved in with a boyfriend who had an 8 year old

And now I have to clean it up again for this 2nd round of Bible College. :p

I doubt that really makes a difference. My boot camp was mixed and my unit that I served with after was 50% female. Some of the women I served with were even worse then the men when it came to swearing.

My Sargent that I ended up with in my training after finishing boot camp was like that too and he was pretty amazing. He believed that encouragement and kindness to his troops was the best way to get them to preform well for him. It must have worked because we always came out first in every competition!

Swearing is a peer pressure thing... it can be unlearned by either getting away from those that swear and being around those that encourage politely you not to swear. I didn't swear a lot till I got a job as a union carpenter. for over 5 years I was ungodly (away from God) and was swearing just like the rest of them. God called on me back to him and as I started relearning who God was (backslidden for over 20 years) I found a desire to clean up my language and God helped me in that as the last two years I worked there I went from swearing 5 times in a conversation to swearing 5 times a week. I now swear maybe 5 times a year because I realize I can express things without swearing better than with it and it does God a disservice to lower my language down to that level when he gave me a brain to use more eloquent speech. I don't look down on people that swear as low sinful etc.. but I do feel that they could improve their vocabulary beyond swear words.
