Ok...I was sure that I started this thread earlier today but I can't see it so I'm starting it again :D

So do you swear? What if someone you are dating asked you to stop? Would you do it?

I've met a guy who seems really nice, kind, tender hearted, just getting started back at church, smart, we have a lot in common but he swears, a lot and I don't like it. I rarely ever swear and I don't want to be with someone who makes it a habit.

I asked him about it and he said that he is trying to clean up his language. He works in construction and it is part of that environment but he told me that he has a bigger vocabulary than that and really needs to break the habit.

I would be mortified if he went to a family event and let a swear word loose - my parents would fall over from shock I think....also, I wouldn't want him to swear if we were at a business function of mine, etc.

So would you continue to date this person if you had such an aversion to swearing and give him a chance to clean up his language?

I know that this may not be a big deal to some but it really is a deal breaker for me. I can understand a slip now and again but I don't like it as part of someone's daily language.

Ok...discuss :)

I usually dont mind it now and then.. I don't do it all that often. My girl does a little more often than I would IDEALLY like it, however, she knows it and is working to correct it..

That being said, I've been around a LOT of it, some of my all time favorite movies are chalk full of it, and ALL of my music is ALWAYS unedited. So I can handle it.. I just prefer it not to be used so much.

Well, from the sound of it, he realizes it is an issue and it is something he is wiling to work on. I think that says a lot. He knows he has problems in that area. I think you should try and encourage him and find ways to help him watch his language. Some people have used swear jars where they have to put a dollar in the jar every time they say a bad word.

I let words fly once in a while, however I am very conscious to when and where it is done. I don't do it in my classroom. I don't do it in front of my family. And for me, there is a huge difference when it comes to the words being said. I think someone dropping an F Bomb or the 4 letter word for poop is a lot worse than someone using the swear slang for donkey, what beavers build, or fatherless child.

I do swear - too much, really. Trying to cut down as too much is just trashy, and I am a lover of words, so I'm sure if I set my mind to it, I can come off sounding more intelligent. I will still swear sometimes, however.

i don't swear and wouldn't date someone who incorparated it into their everyday language. It's just not attractive to me. My older brother did a lot and i associate it with anger; Especially if they swear at me or another person. And to just do it casually, it makes me think the person is trying too hard to be "cool" or something.

Yes, I swear when I drive in this insane traffic. Also, when my team is losing or a bad call was made. Also when I hurt myself. It just pops out haha. I try not to though, since I have a kid and I don't want him to hear me dropping F-bombs left and right when I stub my toe or when a pass is intercepted or when somebody cuts me off just to drive 10 MPH below the speed limit :p

I don't mind if it's occasional, I do occasionally to even though I try not too. If they swore all the time and weren't willing to refrain from it, then yes, it'd be a dealbreaker, but if not I'd probably give them a chance.

Not very often do I swear, but I do. I don't mind it too much when women swear, but I kind of like elegance and grace in women, so uh.. it's unattractive. We should explore this spiritually though, not so much in the context of preference and dating, but what it does to us and what it means to God.

With dating it would not be a dealbreaker with me because it seems like everyone Ive been with swears like a sailor, so I don't notice it.

As for God, I don't have an issue with it either. I HATE the G-D word and don't say it or God's name in anger, those things I consider blasphemous. Swear words are words society has deemed swear words for various reasons, and not everyone agrees on the same swear words being 'swear words'.

It really is subjective, but we are instructed to "not have foul mouths", does this constitute cuss words, or just talking nasty/dirty?
