How the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally may have spread coronavirus across the Upper Midwest
Within weeks of the gathering that drew nearly half a million bikers, the Dakotas, along with Wyoming, Minnesota and Montana, were leading the nation in new coronavirus infections per capita.

Within weeks of the gathering, the Dakotas, along with Wyoming, Minnesota and Montana, were leading the nation in new coronavirus infections per capita. The surge was especially pronounced in North and South Dakota, where cases and hospitalization rates continued their juggernaut rise into October. Experts say they will never be able to determine how many of those cases originated at the 10-day rally, given the failure of state and local health officials to identify and monitor attendees returning home, or to trace chains of transmission after people got sick.

More than 330 coronavirus cases and one death were directly linked to the rally as of mid-September, according to a Washington Post survey of health departments in 23 states that provided information. But experts say that tally represents just the tip of the iceberg, since contact tracing often doesn’t capture the source of an infection, and asymptomatic spread goes unnoticed.

In many ways, Sturgis is an object lesson in the patchwork U.S. response to a virus that has proved remarkably adept at exploiting such gaps to become resurgent. While some states and localities banned even relatively small groups of people, others, like South Dakota, imposed no restrictions — in this case allowing the largest gathering of people in the United States and perhaps anywhere in the world amid the pandemic and creating huge vulnerabilities as tens of thousands of attendees traveled back home to every state in the nation.

Big difference - soldiers went out of a necessity to serve and defend their nations whereas bikers in Sturgis went for a week of self-indulgent debauchery, vulgarity, filth, drunkenness, and crime that was completely unnecessary and a public menace.

Ah.. they weren't drafted.
Yeah, they don't need to draft people for a hedonistic, self-indulgent event where the main goal is to sin as much as possible. People - especially bikers - will line right up for that.

Possibly but the majority that go to Sturgis are everyday riders andnot the club/gang stereotype, the neighbour next door out for an excuse to bond and all wear the same leather to show off their individuality.

Yes, I agree. And they are the ones who go there specifically to commit self-indulgent acts of vulgarity, hedonism, crime, drunkenness, filth, and debauchery. Plus you have the small percent of criminal biker gangs that they go there to associate with and do all these things with.

I hope you include those involving themselves as political supporters these days as they too seem to be following your idea of group mentality

Oh I wasn't saying it's a group mentality. It's just what they do. It's in fact a very individualistic, selfish mentality. It's just one that the bikers all share, but they're not so much following each other as just indulging their selfish lusts together in the same place and at the same time. It's like a den of iniquity, not a cult.

So political supporters are a cult of obnoxious behaviour and that sets them apart.
I didn't say that either. I will say that some people are involved in cult-like political movements, but most just group with those who share their concerns/interests, much like the bikers who go to Sturgis to spend a week of filthy sinning.

And get in fights and loot and burn and speak rudely to each other. :)
Face it.. it is a national cultural thing.

You think most people get in fights and loot and burn and speak rudely to each other? Any proof of this?

My guess is that the attendees don't really care whether the coronavirus cases spike. They probably won't even care or feel any remorse if someone they know dies because of their carelessness. I'm guessing the only time they will understand what they've done is if they themselves are just a few ragged gasps away from dying because they were bound and determined to show how rebellious and tough they were wearing their leathers and riding their hogs around Sturgis.

News and social media. It is the accepted norm or at least must be as no one seems to be teaching people manners on either.

Please show me anything from news and social media that indicates most people in this country (that would be half or more of the people in this country) are getting into fights and looting and burning. I have never seen that. I'm curious as to where you're seeing that reported.
