“Should’ve been”? According to whom? The countless slaves at the time probably would disagree with your assessment. In fact, one need not engage in much research to find blacks at the time, free and slave, did not view the Civil War, a war which was not initially fought with the objective of freedom for slaves, was “stupid.” The abolitionist, as evinced from their writings, didn’t share your opinion. Neither did Frederick Douglas.

Of course this isn’t a popularity contest, so I digress. The Civil War, which eventually sought to also address the issue of slavery, was not “stupid.” Fundamental questions of humanity, what it meant to be human, what the nation collectively stood for in regards to ideals such as freedom, equality, all in relation to slavery, was determined by the Civil War. The Civil War undoubtedly answered those questions politically, legally, and to some extent philosophically. The answer was resolute. Notions of property interests in people defied what it meant to be human, slavery was contrary to human dignity, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments we’re passed, along with a civil rights statute, all of which created a trajectory in the U.S. for a greater realization of liberty, equality, and fairness for non-whites and blacks, albeit an agonizingly slow progress as yet to conclude in completion or perfection.

So, those considerations show the war was not “stupid.” Tragic? Yes. Unfortunate? Yes.

The fact that war was needed to determine slavery is bad is stupid since several other nations were able to figure that one out without killing hundreds of thousands of their own countrymen.

It’s sort of like having a law against convicted felons holding political office. It’s a fine law to have but it would be better if the populace simply refused to vote for a convicted felon on their own volition rather than be forced to.

Those who fought to end slavery were noble in doing so. Our country is stupid for needing them to be so noble.

I can't really argue with that. When the founders we're trying to establish a country out of the individual states, slavery was the one thing that they had to compromise with otherwise there would be no US. I guess they could've stuck to their guns and had no US. That might have been interesting. Maybe we would have ended up with two countries.

But it is abhorrent that there was slavery at all here. But that is the way of humanity. Slavery was a part of pretty much all cultures. Native Americans had slaves. Africans had slaves. It was part of the human culture. Should it be decried? Yes if course. But to continue to harp on something that we had and overcame with our own blood and law is just absurd. Do we do the same with any other country? Do we continue to beat up on Germany for what they did to the Jews? How about the Arab Nations and what they have done to the Jews in the past? Do you rail as hard against China, Russia and N Korea for their inhumanity against their fellows? Because it's still going on in some if those places.

Or are we just going to beat the drum against a country that overcame it's sin?
