Few, I repeat, FEW times in my years in TAW have I disagreed with the venerable Matt, but in this case I must say you're nutburgers!!
So it's awful for Darth Vader to shout NOOOO in Ep.3, but in Empire Strikes Back Luke's AWFUL acting with "nooooo, noooo, that's not true! That's impoooooosible" was Oscar material!?
Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor do this AMAZING light saber duel that takes your breath away and for one brief instant they whip the sabers about, but you find that INCREDIBLE LAME ANew Hope Obi Wan old fart vs. lazy Vader inspiring!? LOL! Or the 'breathtaking' Empire Strikes Back battle where Vader fights Luke one-handed as Luke flails about!!? Yeah, now that was amazing!!
Wookees make this annoying sound for decades, and yet when several make it in a battle that constitutes stepping over the line!!? LOL!
High ground defense made sense.
The dialogue was no more Shakespearean than the original three....
The Windu-Sidious stuff was fine. What's NOT to love when the lightning bolts come out to "UNLIIIIIIMITED POWWWWER!!!"
Hayden Christensen is NOT a good actor, I'll grant you 100%....but seriously.... MARK HAMMIL!!?!? One of the worst actors I've ever seen. Billy Dee Williams!!?
The CGI, imho, was awesome in Ep. 3, less cartoonish than Ep. 2....
I have to disagree with the flat acting? After two AWFUL films of blandness, Natalie Portman finally showed her stuff. Ian McDiarmaid was his usual self. The rest were about the same....There was no Jar-Jar----BONUS!
Music score was great, no real plot holes. Everything was pretty sweet.
Vader had to start off skinny, he was a 20-something!! You want overweight Vader!!?
If you're going to blast Ep.3, you'd have to hate the first original three that had
Jawas
Ewoks
Lando's weird bald robot-like buddy
Nien Nunb (remember that dude!!!!?)
Rancor keeper crying
Sarlaccious Crumb
Boba Fett dying to a burp
A trash compactor with a one-eyed monster in it(!!!)
Luke barely caring that his uncle and aunt got barbecued
Darth Vader choking his entire senior staff
Monsters living in meteors
Mark Hamill's acting
Carrie Fisher's acting
Tauntauns (talk about annoying sounds!)
Little pig men running carbon freezing units
Jawas driving 50-feet tall mega tanks through the deserts looking for junk saying "hoop-tee-Dee!" Lol
Leia's cheesy "someone who loves you!" line as Boushh
Bib Fortuna "Dee wanna wanga!"
Admiral Akbar (talk about goofy!)
A guy with a pig nose defending a buddy with a butt mouth in the cantina
Low budget Tuskin Raiders
I submit, Matt, Star Wars is all a tad over the top. In some ways Ep. 3 was tame in comparison!
I must disagree, plus the two glaring plot holes of Leia remembering Padme and how Vader was able to take a ghost form are there.
ohh boy gurney last post is going to beg the question, does the original 3 hold up? I remember as a kid loving them, especially Empire Strike Back.
I have to disagree here. although the lightsaber battles were fast, they were all pretty poorly choreographed
I wouldn't trade Natalie Portman, but I approve of Idris Elba.
Leia had the Force, too. Maybe she could see into it in some way Luke couldn't. She said it was outlay feelings. Vader couldn't take afore ghost form, but ANAKIN could. Remember Ep. 3 tells us that Qui Gon Jinn learned in death to return in ghost form, and would teach it to Yoda and Obi Wan. Why in death couldn't Anakin, now redeemed, follow suit to their teaching?
Nonsense!! Watch the special features on the DVD's!! The sequence took weeks of preparation and practice, and the stunt coordination was outstanding on site!
I don't know, G. She's not a good actress! She's a looker, but not able to pull emotion or convince me of much!! I remember when I went to see Thor, I couldn't get over how BLAND she was!! I kept shifting my eyes to Kat Dennings!
Leia having some Force talent that they never mention? That's bad writing. The many times Lucas changed things over the years you would think he woulda covered his tracks.
And Anakin and Vader are the same person. Sith Lords are not Nestorian AND that form can only be achieved through a life of peace and et centera.
Plot holes
Portman is a good actor in everything else she is in. The problem wasn't Portman.
I'm really not in the mood to discuss how truly awful Episode III is, so I'll just leave that to Matt. But really, it's only the best of the prequels because the other two actually managed to be worse
Also, I'm amazed at how much I disagree with your ranking, gurney. Since nobody asked, here's mine (and don't say it's nostalgia glasses, I'm still a teenager!):
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. The Force Awakens (maybe it can get to 2 after I watch it again)
4. Return of the Jedi
5. Revenge of the Sith (as I said, by default)
6. Attack of the Clones
7. The Phantom Menace (6 and 7 may be interchangeable)
You're also doing something a tad unfair. You're expected every single small detail to be 1000000% covered with a flawless explanation after starting with Episode IV in 1977 and doing prequels in the 2000's. Come on, man. A touch picky there. I'm a fussy dude, but you're making me look laid-back hippyish!
I just seen the movie. Loved it but there is a sad moment that I did not expect. Oh and I the weird guy who liked all the movies, I'm not to picky and watch for escape and entertainment. In fact there is only one movie so far that I watched and did not like where there was a lot of bad words.
On edit: I now know what the bad guys lightsaber is the way it is.
Lucas didn't have that much of a backstory in the OT to consider when writing the prequels, really, just some bits here and there. The fact that he didn't even try to make it coherent should tell us something.
