The Car Finale: It can't be fixed. Or, it will cost more to fix it than the car is worth. I basically have to just get used to it not starting every once in a while. The guy showed me the magic spot that makes it start. It's some sort of problem in the steering column. The gear shifter is just worn out and doesn't hit that spot exactly right sometimes. At least he didn't charge me for any labor.
Do you have a handyman as a friend? If you can obtain a new steering wheel assembly from a reputable wrecking yard, this might work. My husband did this with several cars of his and they worked for a few more years.

As long as I can get it started...even if it is with some wiggling and figeting...I'll be ok. I don't plan on having this car for TOO much longer if it is possible. Hopefully next spring I will be able to get smth newer and more reliable. Until then, maybe I will keep a bottle of holy water in the car and sprinkle the steering wheel each time that I go anywhere.
