I am trying to grab some Eastern Christian items off of the web while the prices are good, just bought myself a nice traditional 100 knot prayer rope. Can anyone think of some other items, outside of icons that might help supplement my prayer life.

the Orthodox Church (sorry, could not resist hahaha).

in all seriousness how about a Psalter?

it always brings our gunk to the surface (that's how you know it is working) cause the devil hates these times of the year.

I was wondering about this.

I have too many confusing factors. I'm not really doing what I'd like to be doing, since I'm not at home.

But I am reading extra, and attending many more services than normal.

I also have (probably most importantly) the fact that everything changed pretty radically for me just a few weeks ago anyway, and being able to receive the Eucharist. Honestly, that means so much more to me than I ever expected, or dared to hope.

I struggle less, but at the same time I am painfully aware of my shortcomings.

So ... I guess I can't really sort out what the fasting period really means to me. Not yet. Maybe during Great Lent it will make more sense.

Thank you so much for the reply. :)

Hey, I just noticed I have a star! Today is the anniversary of my join date. I'm officially here a year now.

Wow, what a ride it's been! Glory to God!

Hooray. It goes fast. I've been here almost 4.5 years.

I just noticed you're in Florida too. What general area? I live somewhere near Ocala.

I live in the panhandle. Between Pensacola and Tallahassee.

So much has happened in the last year. When I joined, the Orthodox Church was not even on my radar, and I was extremely dissatisfied with the church world in general. Now I have been baptized and chrismated. :)

It has been a very intense year. I'm actually very thankful I was so ill and couldn't do anything else besides look at theology, since that is what drew me to the Church. It feels like several years though. :)

Can anyone answer why I never see many Orthodox books anywhere? I ran across one a couple years ago but haven't found much since.

I've even been to Books A Million & have not found much as compared to Catholicism, etc.

Just type in
John Meyendorff
Alexander Schmemann
Seraphim Rose
Kallistos Ware
Thomas Hopko

Just for starters!

Oh.

Well, I had hoped it would begin to make some sense! ^_^

I have what Father has told me, but then I also find discussing such things as fasting seasons to be "not done" in Orthodoxy. So I had hoped it would begin to make more sense. Then again, with almost no input, perhaps that is not something I should expect.

Hmmm ... For once Matt, I think you are not encouraging me, lol. ^_^

(I am teasing you - no criticism intended!) ;)

In my experience, Christian stores don't carry anything either. Not only no books, but nothing else either. Not even a notecard with anything that looks like an icon or appropriate art I could use for a thank-you note. And I get anything from dismissal, to dark looks, to "why would you want such a thing?" when I ask.

Everything has to come from online. But the good news is that much is available in PDF format, if you don't mind reading on a screen and/or need to keep costs down. I always search "title PDF" for books I want, and I've found about 1/4 of them.

Ok, thanks everyone. I found one book. It was in a secondhand store. I can't remember the exact title...Pilgrim's Journey? I have since sent it to my mom but I enjoyed it very much.

The Way of the Pilgrim, maybe? and you could also read some Dostoyevsky
