Just a little 20 gauge would do fine for the random vermin. That possum will be back looking for a "free" meal - better set a live trap...

My daughter reminded me that I have a .22 rifle. It's the smallest thing I've got. The aim is off a hair, but this is pretty close range. I don't think it's legal to discharge firearms here though.

Not sure I even have any ammo for it. It's really more a sentimental piece. My mother found it in the woods when she was a little girl, and my Grandpa cleaned it up and built a new stock and taught her to shoot using it. Other than a little target practice, I haven't really used it.

I had some traps, but they went missing. He will be back though, you're right about that. Taking care of the coop today. I worry about the pup running up against him too. He'd probably try to play with it like he does the cats, and that could get nasty. Pup's around 60 pounds (he's going to be a big boy) but he's still a baby.

But yeah ... I gotta take care of this. :p

bringing up a possum reminds me of college when I hit one with my Jeep. my roommate (well, housemate) asked where it was so we could make some stew......that grossed me out back then, but I do wonder what that would have tasted like now. Anthony Bourdain has influenced me more than I would normally admit.

taste like chicken

LOL!!! ^_^

Where I come from, it's not so strange to hear of possum stew. But I have never eaten possum. Actually, given that they are scavengers and will eat ANYthing pretty much, and are carnivores as well - I'm not in a big hurry to try it and probably never will. And they kinda look like giant nasty rats with lots of sharp teeth.

The ones I have trapped and shot look dirty.

Maybe they taste like chicken cuz they eat chickens. :p

But I will say that I used to really love my Grandma's squirrel stew with homemade biscuits. :yum:

I would love to try squirrel someday. I hear they are great in pot pie

I bet they would be.

Her stew wasn't really classic "stew" ... it was more chunks of meat in a savory thick broth. A good bit of pepper, as I recall, and I'm not sure what else. But it was YUMMY!!! :yum:

I can't really say it's just like any particular meat, but it's somewhere between beef and venison, maybe a tad more like venison.

Shame, because we had to dispatch a great many squirrels where we used to live, and I don't know how to make it. I should have tried. Our squirrels were fattened on pecans and corn, and I'm sure they were tasty!

Yet people are happy to eat pork?

Most commercial pork (or at least a lot of it) is fed on "whatever" afaik. Yes, not good. And if allowed, pigs will eat anything. I know of some raisers who grow vegetarian-fed pork.

Chickens will eat anything too. When I had a flock I mixed my own feed, and it was a variety of grains, mostly. But they will take any opportunity to eat insects, lizards, or any meat they can get.

Rabbit seems some of the cleanest meat, but it's classified as "unclean" according to the Scriptures.

So, was in statistics lab tonight cracking jokes at my own expense, most people were amused, but one person was like "That's not very funny!" and gave me a look like I was absolutely crazy. I understand that my humor is usually very wry and dry, but okay, everyone else seemed to have a good chuckle over it.

Bible study resumed today!!!

I hadn't realized how much I missed it! Especially since catechism classes are over too.

But the Bible study is very rich - the best I've ever attended anywhere. This year we are doing Romans, which would probably be my first choice if anyone had asked me what I wanted to study.

Yesterday everything was going wrong (don't ask!) - but today I have my car running, made it to Bible study, and everything is going right! (Well, almost everything - those few are good enough by far to overshadow any minor bumps, like my daughter's cat peeing in the puppy's crate!)

I'm so glad the Bible study started back up. :)

Went back to the old parish this weekend to baptize a kid. It was very nice. The choir is something I definitely miss - really, just being able to have some variety in the music at all (ugh).

Today is one of the most perfect days I have ever seen.

I love the wall autumn sunshine falls down. Maybe it's the angles or something, but it's beautiful. The air is crisp, there is a very light breeze blowing. The temperature (according to my weather ap) is 64 degrees. I had to check because after I went outside and realized it was PERFECT, I was curious to know what the perfect temperature would be.

And I finally feel pretty good today, after being sick most of the time for the past some weeks, ever since I got back from my trip.

Deep breath - glory to God - it's a beautiful day!

Looking forward to this evening. I'm on my way shortly to attend Vespers at a nearby Cathedral. I just found out about the Cathedral a week ago. According to the history I can find on it, it was built as a Church for a wealthy family when they immigrated. There is now a Church nearby in the city, and our Church, and I don't think this one has a priest or services or anything anymore. But it's supposed to be one of the most beautiful Greek Orthodox cathedrals down here, and is listed as a destination in lots of travel guides.

Our priest is having Vespers there tonight, because tomorrow is that Church's Feast Day. And they will also have Matins and Divine Liturgy tomorrow, but I doubt I can get there for that.

I'm excited to be able to go see what it looks like though, and to worship in a beautiful Church!

(That and I'm not entirely sure I've ever even been to Vespers - our Church does not have it!)
