  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I generally prefer verses in greek. So not much you would know of :). Perhaps when Philothei or Vasilis are here we'll pick the discussion again. I don't follow the international / anglo-saxon scene too much. It's not a conscience decision or anything, but somehow when I relax my mind forgets its english :).

English is only needed to communicate in the modern world.;) When it comes to chilling out, one goes back to your roots.

In my old days I used to listen to rock and all American bands... now I do prefer Greek balads and soft rock. Some Greek popular songs seem more appealing than loud heavy metal (that I was never into it anyhow) black sabbath would be the far far off I would go into....

I have several tapes of Greek music that are suitable for dancing. I love the Greek dancing and have taken several classes in it at my church. Even at the OCA church we do Greek dancing because the ladies love it.

In fact, we will be having the Greek Festival this coming weekend.

Are there any particularly good CDs of Greek Music that you would recommend, Philothei, or any really good Greek Byzantine Chant.

They have an excellent display of Greek music and Byzantine Chant available.

Do you know e-radio. gr/. (Sharks, I can't post links yet )

You can get all kinds of greek radio stations broadcasting online from that. I'm a regular :). Usually I live under Greek Eclectics. Diesi, Melodia, or Tripa. Diesi plays around 2/3 greek, 1/3 anglo-saxon, so it's a good mix.

lol.... "anglo-saxon" music I like the way you put it.:D..I do like diesi and melodia... my kind of music. My daughter likes to listen to Athens DJ for obvious reasons.. pop and hip hop...BTW it is as bad as in english...

Elizabeth just get a good CD on Greek dancing music, they will be able to help you if you ask them at the festival. For Byz. music get AGNE PARTHENE by Simonopetra Mt. Athos. As far as chanting I like the first tone and esp. the Paschal canon... (or is it plagal first?) in any case I love the Pascha Canon... It is so joyful :):D

Yeah, I say anglo-saxon, because I'm not very familiar with bands and voices, so they could be american, british, aussie or immitations for all I care.

When I was a student in Athens, we would follow artists like Dalaras, Arvanitaki, Thalassinos, Katsimihes, PyxLax - people like that, you get the picture - we would follow them in all performances, ermmm... rephrase... all free performances - we were students :). They were nice times.

OK, we actually managed to save enough to actually pay for a ticket once a year or something.

Emmanuel (pleased to meet you!)

Do you have contact with St Serge Institute? I used to know 2-3 students from there. I put one of them up at my place when they visited our parish (that was a few years back, I was based in England at the time). He was a russian, Dmitri (very common name, I know). Very quiet and low-profile guy.

I believe he takes classes or something there... (sorry to talk for you E)...
Btw, do you happen to have run into (I know it's a long shot) this Finnish guy (Vili or Philip)... he's got a good belly on him and blonde quite curly hair. He doesn't know me, but he's a novice (or inquiring brother, not sure) at the monastery in Finland but apparently he studies at St Serge...

I get the message about the "free" sure.. I am listening to Arvanitaki right now... I like Dalaras and Hari Alexiou... my kind of music...Katsimihas is too "youthful" for me but as good and also Pyxlax... ah who can forget them..???

Hello!!!! Welcome back!

I'm sorry we didn't get to talk, also. I hope that all is well with your family, and David and his family, and all the parish at St. Barbara's. Maybe we will see each other during the Diocesan Assembly next month.

Mary

Everyone is doing well! I'm not sure if David is going to the Assembly, their second baby is 9 months old now, but maybe he and Audra will make it to some things. We are planning on attending so I hope to see you and maybe Eric there! You go to St. Sava's, right? It seems like a very vibrant and growing parish.

Was the question for me or Emmanuel?

Anyway, I'm assuming it was for me and I'm answering :). No :). I haven't made it to Valamo (yet?), as I'm based far away (in Oulu - yes I know what you'll ask, how can a greek survive up here :D, myself I'm not sure yet :D). But I met a finnish monk in the late Fr Sophrony's monastery in Essex a few years ago. Great guy. Fr Melchizedek (Mika in the world, originally from Kuopio I think).

But it was not in vain that you asked. In the Orthodox church everybody knows somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who knows YOU :D. It's a fact of life.

No! I'm not a theologian, neither in the academic nor in the real sense of the term ;). I'm an engineer. I studied in Metsovio.

Hahha, I guess I wasn't clear (nothing new) it was for Emmanuel...
Ah, you're up there in Bp Panteleimon country... It's a nice city, we always take the night auto-train up to there when we head north. You don't happen to know Kirsti Saari, she's up in Oulu too, Orthodox... she sews a lot of pretty embroidery for the Bishop and the church there.

No I don't know that lady. If she goes to Pyhä Kolmea... Holy Trinity :) Cathedral, then I've most probably seen her and she's seen me. Bp Panteleimon knows me by face and greets me in the supermarket :), but we have no common language to communicate in.

*ears perk up* Did I hear Dalaras? My father LOVES him!!! He brought my husband and me to a concert he gave in NYC a few years ago with another greek singer (a female who was excellent). My dad is not letting go of his dream to become this famous Greek singer. He has modeled his voice after Dalaras, since I was a kid, he would sit for hours taping himself singing along with Dalaras. He is actuallly in the studio working on his demo and he wants to send it to Dalaras --- the Greek star and the unknown American. He really is gung ho on this and I am proud that he is still aiming for this dream at nearly 70 yrs old! He said if Col. Sanders could do it with Kentucky Fried Chicken (begin his successful business after retirement age) so can he. ^_^
