I think the principle is that if you have to correct your child, and that sometimes love needs to be tough.It's very true that the proverbs often deal in general principals and hyperbole. But this doesn't mean they are meaningless either, nor that they can be interpreted any way we like. So, what does the author's warning against sparing the rod mean? What principal does the rod convey?
