Washington (CNN) -- A majority of U.S. service members surveyed do not care if the law banning openly gay and lesbian troops from serving is repealed, according to a source knowledgeable with the results of the Pentagon study. Members of Congress are to get an advance look at the study Tuesday.

The number opposing lifting the ban -- known as "don't ask, don't tell" -- fearing negative results "is very small when compared to those who say it will have positive or mixed results, or no effect at all," the source explained.

The Secretary of Defense supports lifting it, the Joint Chiefs of Staff support lifting it, and now it appears most in the military have no problem lifting it. It's time to lift it and end discrimination in the military.

Especially if we're serious about this WoT, we can't afford to fire Arabic translators and other servicemen with unique skill sets simply because of who they choose to date. I think its time to put national security ahead of irrational fears and prejudices.

How about we simply implement a policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" on ALL sexual activity? Then soldiers and sailors can actually focus on the mission at hand, rather than what they do with their genitals and with whom.

The current DADT is not based upong sexual activity, it is based upon sexual attraction. So if we base it on any sexual attraction we would have to kick out almost every soldier. Good plan:thumbsup:

The social right keeps trying to kick this can down the road as far as possible. It started with the SOD, whom was OK with lifting the ban. Then they wanted to make sure that the Joint Chiefs would supporting lifting it which they did. Then they wanted to run studies on troops readiness and moral which showed that lifting the ban would have no effect. Then they wanted to get the opinion of the troops which now we see have no problem with lifting the ban. They are obviously trying to stall and delay this due to moral objections.

Indeed. I wonder what their excuse will be? They'll probably find some washed up homophobic retired general who is against it and take his word for gospel on why it should remain in place.

If other militaries in the world can do it, so can we.

You are willing to kick soldiers out of the military if they boast about a sexual encounter on a weekend leave? Little harsh dontcha think?

I disagree, leaders need to know what is going on with their troops. If there are issues at home those will affect their performance at work. Plus to think that people aren't going to talk about their home life is totally unrealistic. Imagine never asking someone how their spouse or children are doing, what they did over the weekend or what their plans are for the holidays. Granted, I don't want people having graffic sexual discussions at work and there are already rules in place which forbid that. But to think we should place the kinds of limits DADT holds on everyone is insane.

It's best to do as Sec. Gates, Adm. Mullen and 70% of servicemembers want, get rid of this stupid policy.

DADT has to be a supremely disingenuous fiction. I just can't believe that members of military units don't already know who in their ranks are gay or lesbian.

DADT is the law and a policy, it "works" like this:

"Hello, serviceperson, welcome to [Armed Service name here]!
We're not allowed to ask if you're heterosexual, but we're going to assume that you are. If you are not heterosexual, please lie to us by saying nothing. Continue to lie to us by saying nothing until you are discharged (and out of our Reserves)."

Yes, a lot of people know who is and who ain't gay...but not "officially".

Discrimination is not a good thing. Keeping gays out of the military is just idiotic and silly. Saying it doesn't make you a liar, but it does pit you against the SoD, JCoS, and the uniformed members in the military. All of whom are OK with lifting the ban.

I knew we'd get some excuse on why this study is meaningless. All we heard from many was "wait until the study is out". Well its out and it seems that you are the one dismissing it because it didn't have the desired result you wanted.

Face it. The military service people have no problem serving with open gays.

It's time to put national security ahead of homophobia.

Have you seen the study? The actual questions themselves?

Admittedly I haven't. But the Pentagon is saying that it won't negatively affect the military. I trust the military to say what is good for the military.

What an idiotic statement that is. Discrimination in the military is not necessarily a bad thing. Keeping homosexuals out of the military is good thing. Saying that does not make me a liar.

The study is highly suspect. I've heard that the questions were not very straight forward. The purpose being that the studiers could interpret it in such a way as to to come up with a pre-desired result.

It doesn't matter what they SAY, what commanders actually think is that gay service members are not a hindrance to the military otherwise they would not prosecute DADT more lightly when were at war.

I was part of the study. You can guess what I said. There is a minority within the military who don't support openly gay servicemembers, that is true. But the majority of us have no problem with it.

DADT is ridiculous. Plenty of countries around the world, many of them major US allies (such as the UK, Germany, etc.), allow homosexuals to openly serve, and they don't appear to have any major problems with it. This policy is blatant discrimination and needs to be ended, preferably as soon as possible.

THE REAL PENTAGON POLL: 91% OF SERVICE MEMBERS REJECT HOMOSEXUAL LEADERS - 1 IN 4 WOULD QUIT

THE REAL PENTAGON POLL: 91% REJECT HOMOSEXUAL LEADERS. 85% OF COMBAT MARINES DISTRUST, 71% WON’T SHARE SHOWERS, 24% WON’T RE-ENLIST.

HALF MILLION TROOPS, ONE IN FOUR, WOULD LEAVE THE MILITARY

Former Navy Chaplain Gordon James Klingenschmitt just read the full Pentagon report on repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and here's his analysis:

"Don't believe the phony liberal media reports that 70% of troops support open homosexual service, because that statistic included 'mixed' feelings. A closer reading of the fine print in the newly released Pentagon survey shows our troops answered as follows:

In an attempt to skew the results in the OP, your own link skews results! Your link is not any better than the other people!

The survey did not say one in four would quit. It said "24% will leave the military or think about leaving sooner than planned"

For all we know, 1% said they would leave and 23% said that they would think about leaving sooner than planned.
