It was never taught in any of the classes I took while getting my BSc.

You've either been taught it, or you haven't.

I haven't been taught that humans or any other apes have souls. I also have not been taught that humans or any other apes do not have souls.

I have never taken, nor heard of any biology class, that teaches anything about the soul. I have never read any biology textbook or scientific paper that addresses the existance of a soul. And I have a PhD in biology. Take whatever you want from that.

you know what... being that I don't know a whole lot about souls, my answer might be incorrect. A response to this will help me answer your OP. So;

According to those who believe in souls, when a human embryo splits into two separate entities, say, five days after conception, does the soul likewise split in two, or does a new soul get implanted..? In other words, do identical twins have half a soul apiece, or is one of them soulless at conception? (Just a simple Either/Or will do, please --- this isn't an invitation to spout.)

I really don't know the point of the OP. Atheists genearlly do not believe in a "soul." Biology does not address the concept of a "soul" and science in general cannot address intangibles. That is about it, in a nut shell.
