In my very quick 5 minute research on the matter, it appears that Queen Victoria started it because she wore black for 40 years after her husband's death

That's interesting......did it say why she chose black?

That's what I'm trying to find out. All the websites (so far) are saying that it dates back to yada yada, some are saying it dates back to the Roman Empire when a black toga was worn...but they don't say why it's black.

This is what I've found so far...

"The color black best represented the Victorian act of mourning because it symbolizes the absence of light and in turn, life. It was an instantly recognizable sign that a loved one had departed this life. It is also said that wearing black for mourning comes from a Roman idea; the mourners could prevent being haunted from the ghost of the deceased by cloaking themselves in black."

Whoa! That's interesting....the Romans were superstitious, it sounds like....just wonderin' though how "black" protected the mourners from being haunted.....

I certainly agree about the fact that there is a constant spiritual conflict. This is why the believer needs the 'whole armor of God' (Ephesians 6) in order to stand in the faith.

Blessings.

Can't find anything on that yet but did find this from a website pertaining to Roman history...

The ancient Order of Widows, like the ancient Order of Virgins, dates from Apostolic and Scriptural times and is the real origin of widows wearing mourning black or similar dark colour for the rest of their lives.

It is a pious and commendable religious practice and is done for the same reason that priests and religious wear black. It is a sign of witness and of mortification in this life in preparation for the heavenly banquet that is to come."

...for the rest of their lives? Wow, it's almost like they've also entered the realm of the dead too....

in some cultures, the wives are thrown into the burning inferno that their dead husbands are in......

 No thanks ^_^

From what I am finding, which is not very much, it was chosen as the color of mourning to signify spiritual darkness, or, a lack of life/light. Most of the sites I can find back up that theory. Can't find anything on the Romans using it to protect them from ghosts lol

Found a lot on the history of the color black in and of itself...mmm yep most of it is really unpleasant stuff.
