  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You just have to open your heart to God, relalize your sin and your need for God and seek His forgiveness, you have to be willing to surrender your self to God completely. repeating words can never do that. It just makes the person preaching feel good, but the words to not change a persons heart God does.

Thx for replying but that doesn't answer the question.

Thx for the link.
It is made very clear in the full account of Paul's conversion that calling upon the name of the Lord did not refer to prayer. (keep the timeline of events in mind, Saul already asked the Lord what he should)

The Bible states in Acts 9:11, "11 And the Lord said to him (Ananias), “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying"
Saul had already engaged in prayer before the arrival of Ananias. Yet, he was not saved when Ananias arrived.

If prayer is all that is involved in calling on the name of the Lord, then why did it not constitute calling on the name of the Lord for Saul?

Saul was not saved by calling on the name of the Lord until he completed his obedience to the Lord's command, when he arose and was baptized to wash away his sins, as was clearly commanded by the God-sent preacher, Ananias.
16 "Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’"- Acts 22:16

What is "easy believism" opposed to? "Hard believism"? Salvation isn't rocket science. It's so easy even a child can do it. Salvation isn't about what you can do for God (i.e. obedience, good works), though those will be the natural result, but about what Christ did for you.

I answered this in my first post and you said you didn't answer my question, so I am not sure if you will be able to hear this.

Saul, Paul, was saved when calling on the Lord it started with faith, Paul would have never been healed if he did not already believe in Jesus, what did Jesus always say, Your faith has healed you, faith in what Jesus, You have to open your heart to the Lord admit your sins and give your self completely. That is calling on the Name of The Lord. It starts with faith.

Let me paint a picture.

My brother and mom claim to be Christians all their lives, they go to church. After a life time of them doing great evil to me I began to question if they were saved. What i found was they were going through the motions, they call God God with there mind because they do not want to be punished, but they do not Love God, so their tree is dark and their fruit is to. They hate me, and God showed me the truth when he said, If you hate your brother or sister you are a murder and there is no eternal life in a murder. and many other ways he showed me. So I question my so called brother, i said what will you say to God when hhe says you did not love me. my so called brother said I will say I did what you said I believe you were the son of God and I was baptized, I said oh well in that case He has to let you into Heaven. he said I did what he said to do to get into Heaven.

Do you see his mind set, do you see his tree of arrogance? He is going to demand God let him in. My first response would be God I love you, but if you said I did not I did not, did I never love you or was it one time, am I your child, My heart would break.

My so called brother wants into heaven, however he lies cheats steels and is a murder. He can call on the Name of Jesus all he wants unless he surrenders he will never get in.

and they will say Lord we did great works in your name and I will say get away from me I never Knew you.... Not everyone who crys Lord Lord will be saved.
He meant those seeking escape from punishment and not God. You have to Love God. If you Love God in your heart you are saved and if not you are just lying to everyone maybe even your self because everyone knows who and what they Love.

Seeking Heaven to escape Hell is not seeking Heaven at all but running from hell. If you seek Heaven you look for God, You read the Bible and you try your best to take on the quality of Heaven, in short You surrender your self to God, nail you self to the cross and put the flesh(the ole self) to death.

Here was my original question:
Can anyone show me in the New Testament where someone was saved by the sinners prayer? Or instructed or encouraged to pray for his or her salvation?

And here was your reply:
You just have to open your heart to God, release your sin and your need for God and seek His forgiveness, you have to be willing to surrender your self to God completely. repeating words can never do that. It just makes the person preaching feel good, but the words to not change a persons heart God does.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His
commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. - 1 John 5:3

  • At what point did Saul have his sins forgiven?
  • In Acts 22:10, Saul referred to Jesus as Lord. And it's obvious he was penitent when he asked 'What shall I do Lord?'
  • Why did Ananais command Saul to call upon the name of the Lord in Acts 22:16 if Saul, supposedly, had already called upon the name of the Lord?

"11 So the Lord said to him, “Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying." - Acts 9:11

- Saul already engaged in prayer before the arrival of Ananias, yet he had not called upon the name of the Lord (cf. Acts 22:16)

  • If the word of God if given free course in the life of the believer, that believer will become obedient to the commandments of God.
  • The word of God will work trust in the promises of God.
  • The word of God will work appreciation of the holiness of God.
  • The word of God will work repentance in the life of the believer, because the Lord commands all believers to repent, or turn to God. (acts 17:30).
  • The word of God will work the confession of Christ in the life of the believer, because the word of God teaches us to confess Christ unto our salvation (Romans 10:9,10).
  • The word of God will cause the believer to be baptized because the Lord commands that people be baptized in the name of Christ (Acts 2:38; Mark 16:16)

Failing to obey the commandments of the Lord with respect to holiness, the faith becomes a dead faith. Since the faith that saves is an obedient faith, it follows that obedience to the commandments of God is the distinguishing characteristic of those who are saved, and it follows that regardless of how strong one's faith may be, he is lost if he is not obedient to the commandments of God.

So here is my original question again:
Can anyone show me in the New Testament where someone was saved by the sinners prayer? Or instructed or encouraged to pray for his or her salvation?

I have read through the thread to date.

So is your point that the sinner's prayer is ineffective in saving people? And that adherence to the commandments is the only effective means of salvation?

13 But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

This is not a prayer for salvation. This is a prayer for forgiveness after salvation has already occurred.

Nope. It (the sinner's prayer) is a man made invention, created by the culture of synergism in the church, where the biggest goal is to get some kind of human mental 'decision' because they (synergists) think human decision or activity is what causes or results in the new birth. Therefore they feel the need to have something to "check off" the list in order to be "born again".

Monergists simply preach the gospel and let the Holy Spirit convert hearts and open eyes. We don't have a need to manipulate people into doing "activities" and making "decisions" in order to try to get the person born again.

God just does it (cause regeneration) whenever He pleases, per John Chapter 3.
