  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sinners prayer?

"John Gill commentary
This is his prayer; a short, but a very full one, and greatly different from that of the Pharisee: in which is a confession that he was a sinner; a sinner in Adam, who had derived a sinful nature from him, being conceived and born in sin; and a sinner by practice, having committed many actual transgressions, attended with aggravating circumstances; a guilty and filthy sinner, a notorious one, deserving of the wrath of God, and the lowest hell: he speaks of himself, as if he was the only sinner in the world; at least, as if there was none like him: and there is in this prayer also a petition; and the object it is put up to, is "God", against whom he had sinned; with whom there is mercy and forgiveness; and who only can forgive sin; and who has promised that he will: and has proclaimed his name, a God, pardoning iniquity, transgression, and sin; and has given instances of his forgiving grace and mercy; and therefore the publican was right in addressing him by confession: the petition he makes to him is, to be "merciful", or "propitious" to him; that is, to show mercy to him, through the propitiary sacrifice of the Messiah, which was typified by the sacrifices under the law: the first thing a sensible sinner wants, is an application of pardoning grace and mercy; and forgiveness springs from mercy; and because the mercy of God is free and abundant, therefore pardon is so: but this is not to be expected from an absolute God, or God out of Christ. God is only propitious in Christ: hence it may be observed, that God pardons none but those to whom he is propitious in his Son; and that he forgives sin upon the foot of a reconciliation, and satisfaction made to his law, and justice, and so pardon is an act of justice, as well as of mercy; and that there is no pardoning mercy but through Christ. Can anyone show me in the New Testament where someone was saved by the sinners prayer? Or instructed or encouraged to pray for his or her salvation?

which sinners prayer ?
and may i inquire why you ask ?

there are many sinners prayers ..prayer is basically communicating with God to ask something of him .
bible recorded sinners prayers range from ..lord remember me ,
to, lord forgive me ,a sinner .
and a myriad of variations in between that are but attempts to voice the desperation of the realization that we are in dire need of saving .

Some one encapsulated a number of these into a preset prayer to help those who desired salvation to voice that desire and need .
whether that is good or bad depends solely on the sincerity of the person calling upon the lord .. to call upon the lord is to communicate with god to ask something of him.. thus it is prayer -in this case asking him to to save us .

Ian McCormick who died and was sent back .. was lead by God, in a vision of the words scrolling before him, to pray, in sincerity from the heart as he lay dying of box jellyfish toxin ,the lords prayer .. so to him ,i guess he might say ..the sinners prayer is .."Our father which art in heaven .... etc "

so where in the bible is the sinners prayer ?... every where it says to believe,
to repent, to have faith,to declare faith,to confess outwardly of that faith in JESUS .

i heard recently a testimony of a man who visited a church and upon hearing a sentence the preacher said ..stood up for the first time in his life and said out loud ..i believe this JESUS .. he was saved and went on to serve the lord in ministering the gospel .. so in his case the sinners prayer was a declaration of his new found faith .
its all very interesting and cannot be set to a man made concept methinks :)

Has all the hall marks of the prayer. Godly sorrow, then Justification. That is what the Bible says in this instance anyways.

Of course it's a prayer. But was not the individual already saved? Therefore, it's not a prayer to become saved, but a prayer for forgiveness of sins.

Luke 18:13-14

World English Bible (WEB)

13 But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
My answer to the OP.

My answer to the OP.
actually it is the verses Luke 18:10-14 , because Jesus said that he walked away justified because of his prayer, and we all know justified means saved, as though you never sinned, declared not guilty

What is "easy believism" opposed to? "Hard believism"? Salvation isn't rocket science. It's so easy even a child can do it. Salvation isn't about what you can do for God (i.e. obedience, good works), though those will be the natural result, but about what Christ did for you.
Alright! Someone who actually thinks.

Over simplifying faith leads to error.
^_^ Good one. ^_^ Yeah, we gotta make sure that yoke is as difficult as possible, and that load heavy. If he will only pay attention, we'll show Jesus how it REALLY ought to be.

No there is not. Here is the closest thing:

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. KJV

Exactly, I don't know why people keep saying there is none when Jesus gave us a example of it right in Luke.

It wasn't an example of a sinner's prayer. It was an example of a a repentant heart. It wasn't the prayer that caused him to be saved. It was his understanding of his sinfulness that caused him to pray.

How is it that all you folks were so focused on either defending the so-called sinner's prayer or denying it that you missed the whole point of the OP. The Op is setting you up for a trap in order to school you in obedience to the law and baptismal regeneration I think. He is a Campbellite.
