I have now responded to it, but the article he posted did not talk much about what it means to fulfill the Law, nor did your post interact with what it means.
I completely agree that we are under the New Covenant and that we are not under the Mosaic Covenant, however, we are still under the same God. God's holiness, righteousness, and goodness are eternal and unchanging, so the way to do what is holy, righteous, and good existed from the beginning before God made any covenants with man, so it is not dependent on any covenant, though it was revealed through them (Romans 7:12). So there is a distinction between a set of unchanging instructions for how to live according to the eternal holiness, righteousness, and goodness of our God and a covenant agreement to abide by those instructions. There are many examples throughout Genesis that show that God's Laws were already in place before they were given at Sinai, so certain actions did not become holy, righteous, and good when the Law was given, but rather the Law revealed what actions have always been and will always be in accordance with God's holiness, righteousness, and goodness. So anyone who wants to find out how to do what is holy, righteous, and good can do so by reading the Mosaic Law, regardless of what covenant, if any, they are under, but as part of the New Covenant, we are still told to follow God's instructions for how to do what is holy, righteous, and good (1 Peter 1:13-16, 1 John 3:10, Ephesians 2:10). For example, 1 Peter 1:13-16 says that we should have a holy conduct not in order to be identify with Jews or because we are under the Mosaic Covenant, but because God is holy, so follow God's instructions in Leviticus for how to have a holy conduct is about identifying with the holiness of our God. Jesus was sinless, so he set a perfect example for how to walk in obedience to the Mosaic Law, and as his disciples, we are told to follow his example (1 Peter 2:21-22) and to walk in the same way that he walked (1 John 2:3-6). We are not told that following Jesus is just for Jews.
Thank you for your post.
Jesus was under the Old Covenant Law of Moses. Jesus Christ ended the Law of Moses by fulfilling/finishing/completing all of its requirements by His birth, life, death on the cross, and ascension. All Christians are under the New Covenant Law of Jesus Christ.
Galatians 3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed be every one who hangs on a tree”— rsv
I took the following out of your previous post to Dr. Bruce in order to comment on it.
"So because we have been grafted into God's chosen people, Israel, our behavior should likewise reflect our status as such. How can someone be part of a holy nation while refusing to follow God's Laws for how to have a holy conduct?"
Gentiles/Greeks have not been grafted into God's chosen people, Israel.
Both Israel and the Gentiles are branches attached to the same olive tree (God).
Israel is the original, natural branches that are attached to the olive tree (God) and the Gentiles are the wild branches that have been grafted onto this same olive tree (God).
Non-Israelite Christians do not ever become Christian Israelites.
Romans 11:21-24
For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. 22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off. 23 And even the others, if they do not persist in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. 24 For if you have been cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree. rsv
The laws that are necessary for Christians to obey are God's natural moral laws. The essence of these laws is that we must love God and our neighbors.
The goal of every Christian is to be approved to inherit eternal life after he dies. Jesus and His apostles tell us in the New Testament which commands of God's we must obey on earth in order to be approved to inherit eternal life after we die.
Luke 10:25-28
And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.” rsv
Please note that Jesus did not say that the lawyer needed to follow the laws in Leviticus in order to inherit eternal life.
Matthew 19:16-19
And behold, one came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to him, “Which?” And Jesus said, “You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” rsv
Please note that Jesus did not say that the rich young man needed to follow the laws in Leviticus in order to inherit eternal life.
Romans 13:8-10
Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. rsv
Please note that Paul did not say that we need to follow the laws in Leviticus in order to inherit eternal life. The laws in Leviticus are not valid for Christians and this includes both Jews and non-Jews who convert to Christianity.
Galatians 3:23-28
23 Now before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under restraint until faith should be revealed. 24 So that the law was our custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian; 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. rsv
The Law of Moses was given to the Israelites because they built the golden calf and worshiped it. The Law of Moses was given to them to train them (yoke them) so that they could learn to obey God's natural moral laws. The Law of Moses was a type of slavery.
What does Peter say about this yoke that is the Law of Moses/Old Covenant? He states that it is an unbearable yoke!
Acts 15:7-11
And after there had been much debate, Peter rose and said to them, “Brethren, you know that in the early days God made choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God who knows the heart bore witness to them, giving them the Holy Spirit just as he did to us; 9 and he made no distinction between us and them, but cleansed their hearts by faith. 10 Now therefore why do you make trial of God by putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 But we believe that we shall be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.” rsv
Under the New Covenant of Jesus Christ, the Jews will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as the Greeks/Gentiles will be saved!
The Greeks/Gentiles were never under the Law of Moses/Old Covenant. Now, under the New Covenant of Jesus Christ, both the Christian Greeks/Gentiles and the Christian Israelites/Jews do not follow the laws in Leviticus. All faithful Christians regardless of ethnicity are the people of God and no person's ethnicity is better than any other person's ethnicity.
